Data Science Intern Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a data science intern in New York?
Data science internships in New York do not require a state-issued license or certification. Most employers expect current enrollment in a bachelor's or master's program in data science, statistics, computer science, or a closely related field. New York City's dense concentration of finance, media, and health tech firms means recruiters often look for candidates with project portfolios on GitHub, relevant coursework, and at least one demonstrated applied project involving real datasets.
Which companies hire data science interns in New York?
Employers hiring data science interns in New York right now include KBR, Lyft, and News, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. New York's finance and media sectors mean large banks, insurance companies, and advertising technology firms account for a significant share of intern postings year-round.
Which New York cities have the most data science intern jobs?
New York, Buffalo, and New City have the most data science intern openings in New York. New York City dominates because of its concentration of global financial firms, major media companies, and health systems, while Albany draws openings from state government technology initiatives and insurance carriers, and Buffalo benefits from growing health informatics programs tied to institutions like the University at Buffalo.

Yes, and more than most fields. About 100% of data science intern openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting how well analytical and modeling work translates to distributed settings. The most realistic entry path is building a portfolio of independent projects using publicly available datasets and applying through university recruiting programs at large New York employers. JPMorgan Chase, Verizon, and Memorial Sloan Kettering all run structured intern and new-graduate programs that explicitly target students without prior professional experience. Candidates who have completed Kaggle competitions, contributed to open-source repositories, or held a research assistant role in a New York university lab consistently stand out in entry-level applicant pools.
