Debt Collector Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a debt collector in New York?
Debt collectors working in New York City must register with the New York City Department of Consumer and Worker Protection under the debt collection agency licensing requirements, while collectors operating statewide outside the city are governed by the New York State Department of Financial Services. Most employers require a high school diploma at minimum. Familiarity with the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act and New York's own debt collection regulations is essential before starting work.
Which companies hire debt collectors in New York?
Employers hiring debt collectors in New York right now include Deutsche Bank, MetLife, and Macquarie, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's concentration of major banks, hospital networks, and third-party collection agencies means openings appear across a wide range of industries throughout the state.
Which New York cities have the most debt collector jobs?
New York, Columbus, and New York account for the most debt collector openings in New York. New York City dominates due to its density of financial institutions, healthcare systems, and third-party collection agencies, while Buffalo and Albany generate steady demand from regional banks, credit unions, and large health systems that maintain significant back-office collections operations outside the metro.
Are there remote debt collector jobs in New York?
Yes, and they are more common than in many fields, since collections work is largely phone and software-based. About 28% of debt collector openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how readily the role translates to a home-office setup. Outbound consumer collections and medical billing recovery roles tend to offer the most remote flexibility.
How can I get hired as a debt collector in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying directly to third-party collection agencies and large hospital revenue cycle departments in New York, which regularly hire for entry-level collections representative roles with no prior experience required. Employers such as Northwell Health and major regional agencies often train new hires on-site. Moving laterally from customer service, retail banking, or medical billing into a junior collections role is a well-worn path, and completing a course in the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act signals readiness to compliance-focused hiring managers.
Where can I find and apply to debt collector jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to debt collector jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current New York openings updated regularly. Find roles that fit your experience and location and apply directly to the employers posting them.
