Dental Assistant Jobs in South Dakota: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a dental assistant in South Dakota?
South Dakota requires dental assistants who perform expanded functions, including placing restorations or taking radiographs independently, to register with the South Dakota Board of Dentistry. Registration typically requires completing a state-approved dental assisting program or accumulating documented on-the-job training, plus passing required competency assessments. Entry-level assistants working only in basic supportive roles may begin under direct dentist supervision while completing their coursework and registration requirements.
Which companies hire dental assistants in South Dakota?
Employers hiring dental assistants in South Dakota right now include West Dakota Dental Partners, Aspen Dental, and Pillar Dental, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Large integrated health systems such as Sanford Health and Avera Health account for a significant share of openings statewide, alongside independent and group dental practices concentrated in Sioux Falls and Rapid City.
Which South Dakota cities have the most dental assistant jobs?
Sioux Falls, Rapid City, and Canton are the South Dakota cities with the most dental assistant openings. Sioux Falls drives the largest share of listings as the state's most populous city and the home base of major health systems like Sanford and Avera, while Rapid City generates consistent demand anchored by Monument Health and a growing network of specialty dental practices serving western South Dakota.
Are there remote dental assistant jobs in South Dakota?
Yes, but they're rare. Dental assisting is a hands-on chairside role that requires physical presence with patients and equipment, so remote work is not a realistic option for most positions. About 0% of dental assistant openings tied to South Dakota are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, and those roles typically involve administrative, billing, or patient coordination duties rather than direct clinical work.
How can I get hired as a dental assistant in South Dakota with little or no experience?
The most direct entry path is completing an accredited dental assisting program at a school like Southeast Technical College in Sioux Falls or Western Dakota Tech in Rapid City, both of which offer hands-on externship placements with local practices. Sanford Health and Avera Health occasionally post dental assistant trainee or dental aide roles designed for candidates still completing their registration. Candidates with a background in medical reception or patient services also transition into entry-level dental assistant positions, especially at high-volume group practices.
Where can I find and apply to dental assistant jobs in South Dakota?
You can find and apply to dental assistant jobs in South Dakota on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings at practices and health systems across the state. Search the listings to find roles that match your experience level, location preference, and specialty area, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
