Dental Hygienist Jobs in Michigan: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a dental hygienist in Michigan?
You must earn an associate or bachelor's degree in dental hygiene from a program accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation, pass the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination, and pass a clinical board examination accepted in Michigan before applying to the Michigan Board of Dentistry for licensure. Michigan requires renewal every two years and completion of continuing education hours to maintain an active license.
How much do dental hygienists make in Michigan?
Dental hygienists in Michigan earn a median of about $83,790 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $77,230 for the lowest 10% to over $96,970 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire dental hygienists in Michigan?
Employers hiring dental hygienists in Michigan right now include Heartland Dental, Smile Jobs, and Great Expressions Dental Centers, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Michigan's mix of large integrated health systems, community health organizations, and multi-location private dental groups means openings appear consistently across both metro and smaller regional markets.
Which Michigan cities have the most dental hygienist jobs?
Troy, Lansing, and Novi have the most dental hygienist openings in Michigan. Detroit anchors the list because of the concentration of large health systems and specialty dental practices in the metro area, while Grand Rapids benefits from Corewell Health's regional footprint and a growing suburban patient base that supports steady demand at both private offices and clinic settings.
Are there remote dental hygienist jobs in Michigan?
Yes, but they're rare. Dental hygiene is a hands-on clinical role, so the overwhelming majority of positions require in-person patient care. About 0% of dental hygienist openings tied to Michigan are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, and those exceptions are almost entirely administrative, public health education, or tele-dentistry support roles rather than direct clinical positions.
How can I get hired as a dental hygienist in Michigan with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying directly to community health centers and federally qualified health clinics across Michigan, which regularly hire new graduates and often provide structured clinical mentorship. Corewell Health and Henry Ford Health both onboard new-grad hygienists through their outpatient dental programs. Candidates who hold a current Michigan license and a completed DANB Infection Control certification have a meaningful edge, and lateral moves from dental assistant roles into hygiene positions are a recognized stepping stone at multi-location group practices.
Where can I find and apply to dental hygienist jobs in Michigan?
You can find and apply to dental hygienist jobs in Michigan on Migrate Mate, which lists current Michigan openings across private practices, health systems, and community clinics. Find the roles that fit your credentials and location, then apply directly to each one.
