Registered Nurse Med Surg Jobs in Michigan: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a registered nurse med surg in Michigan?
To become a registered nurse med surg in Michigan, you must graduate from an accredited nursing program, pass the NCLEX-RN, and obtain an active RN license through the Michigan Board of Nursing, which is part of the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs. Michigan participates in the Nurse Licensure Compact, so compact-state license holders may practice in Michigan without a separate state application. Med-surg experience typically follows licensure through a new-graduate hire or residency program at an acute-care hospital.
How much do registered nurse med surgs make in Michigan?
Registered nurse med surgs in Michigan earn a median of about $94,300 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $77,260 for the lowest 10% to over $116,710 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire registered nurse med surgs in Michigan?
Employers hiring registered nurse med surgs in Michigan right now include Corewell Health, Henry Ford Health, and University of Michigan Health-West, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Michigan's large integrated health systems and academic medical centers consistently generate the highest volume of med-surg floor openings across the state.
Which Michigan cities have the most registered nurse med surg jobs?
The cities with the most registered nurse med surg openings in Michigan are Grand Rapids, Jackson, and Wyoming. Detroit leads because of the density of major health systems headquartered in the metro, including Henry Ford Health and Detroit Medical Center, while Grand Rapids and Ann Arbor draw volume from Spectrum Health and Michigan Medicine respectively, each of which operates large inpatient campuses that require substantial med-surg staffing year-round.
Are there remote registered nurse med surg jobs in Michigan?
Yes, but they're rare. Med-surg nursing is a direct, hands-on inpatient role that requires physical bedside care, so the vast majority of positions are on-site. About 62% of registered nurse med surg openings tied to Michigan are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, and those roles are almost exclusively in care management, utilization review, or telephonic case coordination rather than direct floor nursing.
How can I get hired as a registered nurse med surg in Michigan with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to a new-graduate nurse residency program run by a large Michigan hospital system. Henry Ford Health, Spectrum Health, and Michigan Medicine all operate structured residency programs that onboard new RNs directly onto med-surg units and provide precepted orientation lasting several months. Candidates with a clinical practicum completed at a Michigan hospital, Epic EHR exposure, and an active Michigan RN license before the program start date stand out in the applicant pool.
Where can I find and apply to registered nurse med surg jobs in Michigan?
You can find and apply to registered nurse med surg jobs in Michigan on Migrate Mate, which lists current Michigan openings from hospitals, health systems, and medical facilities across the state.
