Mental Health Counselor Jobs in Michigan: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a mental health counselor in Michigan?
You become a mental health counselor in Michigan by earning a master's degree in counseling or a related field, then applying to the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs for a Limited License Professional Counselor credential while you complete your supervised hours. After accumulating the required post-master's supervised clinical experience, you sit for the National Counselor Examination and apply for full Licensed Professional Counselor licensure through LARA.
Which companies hire mental health counselors in Michigan?
Companies currently hiring mental health counselors in Michigan include Tahoma Counseling, Gatherwell Counseling, and Courtney Albin Counseling, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Michigan's robust network of community mental health authorities, anchored by county-run agencies and large integrated health systems, creates consistent year-round demand across urban and rural regions alike.
Which Michigan cities have the most mental health counselor jobs?
Jenison, Saginaw, and Kentwood have the most mental health counselor openings in Michigan. Detroit drives the largest share through its dense concentration of hospital systems, federally qualified health centers, and county community mental health agencies, while Grand Rapids and Lansing generate strong demand through regional health networks and state government behavioral health programs.
Are there remote mental health counselor jobs in Michigan?
Yes, and more than most clinical roles, since telehealth has become a mainstream delivery model for outpatient counseling. About 63% of mental health counselor openings tied to Michigan are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting the broad adoption of teletherapy platforms across private practices and health systems. Individual therapy, case management, and crisis support coordination are the functions most likely to be offered remotely.
How can I get hired as a mental health counselor in Michigan with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for a Limited License Professional Counselor position at a Michigan community mental health authority, which are the county-run agencies required by state law that routinely hire new graduates into supervised roles. Employers like Henry Ford Health and Genesee Health System run structured post-master's residency tracks that pair new clinicians with supervisors who log your required hours toward full licensure. Coming in from a case manager, crisis worker, or peer support specialist role at one of these agencies is a common lateral move that builds the clinical record employers want. Completing your Limited LPC application through LARA before you start interviewing signals readiness and shortens the hiring process.
