Mental Health Counselor Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a mental health counselor in Texas?
To work as a mental health counselor in Texas, you must obtain licensure through the Texas State Board of Examiners of Professional Counselors, known as TSBEP. The path starts with a master's degree in counseling or a closely related field, followed by supervised post-graduate hours as a Licensed Professional Counselor Associate, then passing the National Counselor Examination before applying for full LPC licensure. Texas has specific supervision requirements, so confirming your degree program meets TSBEP standards before enrolling is essential.
Which companies hire mental health counselors in Texas?
Employers hiring mental health counselors in Texas right now include Management & Training Corporation, IDEA Public Schools, and LifeStance Health, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's large network of community mental health centers, veterans services organizations, and integrated hospital systems means steady demand across both urban and rural areas of the state.
Which Texas cities have the most mental health counselor jobs?
Austin, Houston, and San Antonio are the Texas cities with the most mental health counselor openings, driven by large hospital systems, federally qualified health centers, and veterans affairs facilities concentrated in those metros. Smaller cities and suburban areas with major institutions, such as teaching hospitals or regional community mental health authorities, also generate consistent openings that reflect local population growth and unmet behavioral health needs.
Are there remote mental health counselor jobs in Texas?
Yes, and more than most clinical fields, since telehealth has been widely adopted in behavioral health. About 6% of mental health counselor openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the strong telehealth infrastructure that expanded across the state in recent years. Outpatient individual therapy, crisis counseling, and employee assistance program roles are the positions most likely to be offered fully remote.
How can I get hired as a mental health counselor in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry point is securing a position as a licensed professional counselor associate while completing your supervised hours, which large Texas employers such as community mental health centers and integrated health systems actively hire for. Applying to practicum or internship programs at institutions affiliated with Texas universities is a strong first step, and many system-level employers in Houston and Dallas have structured residency tracks for new graduates. Adjacent roles such as case manager, mental health technician, or crisis intervention specialist can also open the door to clinical counseling positions for candidates still building their supervised hours.
Where can I find and apply to mental health counselor jobs in Texas?
You can find and apply to mental health counselor jobs in Texas on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings tied to Texas employers. Search the listings for roles that match your license level, specialty, and preferred location, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
