Mental Health Therapist Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a mental health therapist in Texas?
To become a licensed mental health therapist in Texas, you must earn a master's degree in counseling, social work, or a related field and then apply through the Texas State Board of Examiners of Professional Counselors for a Licensed Professional Counselor Associate credential. After accumulating supervised clinical hours, you sit for the National Counselor Examination and apply for full LPC licensure. Social work graduates follow a parallel path through the Texas State Board of Social Worker Examiners toward LCSW licensure.
Which companies hire mental health therapists in Texas?
Employers hiring mental health therapists in Texas right now include LifeStance Health, Eating Recovery Center, and Lone Star Circle of Care, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's large integrated health systems, county behavioral health authorities, and expanding telehealth providers each maintain ongoing pipelines for licensed therapists across urban and suburban markets.
Which Texas cities have the most mental health therapist jobs?
Austin, Houston, and Dallas account for the largest share of mental health therapist openings in Texas. Houston and Dallas-Fort Worth concentrate most demand because of their dense hospital systems, large insured populations, and county-funded behavioral health networks, while San Antonio's substantial military community and VA-affiliated providers generate consistent openings for trauma and crisis specialists.
Are there remote mental health therapist jobs in Texas?
Yes, and more than most clinical fields, because licensed therapists can deliver talk therapy over secure video platforms without any hands-on component. About 23% of mental health therapist openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the strong telehealth infrastructure that expanded rapidly in the state. Individual therapy, intake assessment, and crisis counseling roles are the most likely to offer fully remote schedules.
How can I get hired as a mental health therapist in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for an LPC Associate position, which is specifically designed for clinicians who have finished their master's degree but are still accumulating supervised hours. Large Texas community mental health centers such as Austin Travis County Integral Care and the Harris Center for Mental Health and IDD run structured supervision programs for new graduates. Adjacent roles like case manager, mental health technician, or psychiatric rehabilitation specialist at Texas hospital systems also provide a credible bridge into licensed therapy work.
Where can I find and apply to mental health therapist jobs in Texas?
You can find and apply to mental health therapist jobs in Texas on Migrate Mate, which lists current Texas openings updated in real time. Find the roles that fit your credentials, specialties, and preferred location, then apply directly to each employer through the listing without any additional sign-up steps.
