Registered Dental Assistant Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a registered dental assistant in Texas?
To become a registered dental assistant in Texas, you must apply for registration with the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners after completing an accredited dental assisting program or meeting the board's equivalent education requirements. You also need to pass a board-recognized exam covering dental assisting competencies and hold a valid radiography certification. Once registered, you must maintain your registration through continuing education as required by the board.
How much do registered dental assistants make in Texas?
Registered dental assistants in Texas earn a median of about $45,430 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $35,400 for the lowest 10% to over $57,640 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire registered dental assistants in Texas?
Employers hiring registered dental assistants in Texas right now include Rodeo Dental & Orthodontics, Western Dental & Orthodontics, and Texas A&M University, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's large network of dental service organizations and multi-location group practices means steady openings across both urban centers and suburban communities throughout the state.
Which Texas cities have the most registered dental assistant jobs?
The cities with the most registered dental assistant openings in Texas are Dallas, Fort Worth, and Laredo. Houston and Dallas-Fort Worth lead because of their sheer population size and the density of dental service organizations and specialty group practices headquartered or heavily concentrated there, while San Antonio's large military-affiliated and community health populations drive consistent demand across general and specialty dental offices.
Are there remote registered dental assistant jobs in Texas?
Yes, but they're rare. Registered dental assisting is fundamentally a chairside, hands-on role, so the vast majority of positions require in-person work. About 0% of registered dental assistant openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those tend to be administrative or care coordination roles that overlap with dental assisting functions rather than traditional clinical positions.
How can I get hired as a registered dental assistant in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is completing an accredited dental assisting program in Texas, which many community colleges such as Houston Community College and San Antonio College offer, and then applying directly to high-volume dental service organizations that run structured onboarding for new graduates. Candidates who hold their Texas State Board of Dental Examiners registration and a radiography certification before applying have a clear edge. Lateral moves from dental receptionist or sterilization technician roles at multi-location practices are another common door into a chairside assisting position.
