Licensed Practical Nurse Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a licensed practical nurse in Texas?
You become a licensed practical nurse in Texas by completing an accredited practical nursing program, which typically takes about a year, then passing the NCLEX-PN exam. After passing, you apply for licensure through the Texas Board of Nursing, which issues the official Texas LPN license. Texas also participates in the Nurse Licensure Compact, so nurses licensed in other compact states can often work in Texas without obtaining a separate license.
How much do licensed practical nurses make in Texas?
Licensed practical nurses in Texas earn a median of about $62,240 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $48,910 for the lowest 10% to over $76,140 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire licensed practical nurses in Texas?
Employers hiring licensed practical nurses in Texas right now include CHRISTUS Health, Optum, and Texas Health and Human Services Commission, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's large network of long-term care chains, regional hospital systems, and federally qualified health centers generates steady openings for licensed practical nurses across urban and rural counties.
Which Texas cities have the most licensed practical nurse jobs?
San Antonio, Tyler, and Houston have the most licensed practical nurse openings in Texas. Houston's size and its concentration of large hospital networks and long-term care campuses account for the greatest volume, while Dallas-Fort Worth and San Antonio generate strong demand through a mix of major health systems, Veterans Affairs facilities, and rapidly growing suburban communities with skilled nursing and rehabilitation centers.
Are there remote licensed practical nurse jobs in Texas?
Yes, but they're rare. Licensed practical nurse work is primarily hands-on and performed on-site, so fully remote positions are the exception rather than the rule. About 1% of licensed practical nurse openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those tend to involve telephonic case management or utilization review roles rather than direct patient care.
How can I get hired as a licensed practical nurse in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a long-term care or skilled nursing facility, where Texas employers such as nursing home chains and rehabilitation centers regularly hire new LPN graduates. CHRISTUS Health and HCA Healthcare operate new-graduate transition programs in Texas that pair entry-level LPNs with experienced nurses. Candidates who have worked as certified nursing assistants or patient care technicians have an easier time moving into LPN roles because the clinical exposure is recognized. Holding an active Texas Board of Nursing license before you apply gives you a clear advantage over candidates still awaiting results.
Where can I find and apply to licensed practical nurse jobs in Texas?
You can find and apply to licensed practical nurse jobs in Texas on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Find roles that fit your experience, location, and specialty preference and apply directly to each employer through the listings.
