Licensed Practical Nurse Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a licensed practical nurse in New York?
To become a licensed practical nurse in New York, you must complete an approved practical nursing program, then pass the NCLEX-PN licensing exam, and apply for licensure through the New York State Education Department's Office of the Professions. New York does not participate in the Nurse Licensure Compact, so out-of-state LPNs need a New York-specific license before practicing in the state. Most approved programs take roughly a year to complete and are offered through community colleges and vocational schools across the state.
How much do licensed practical nurses make in New York?
Licensed practical nurses in New York earn a median of about $67,180 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $54,480 for the lowest 10% to over $81,530 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire licensed practical nurses in New York?
Employers hiring licensed practical nurses in New York right now include Trinity Health, Massena Hospital, and Kaleida Health, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's dense network of skilled nursing facilities, home health agencies, and large hospital systems means steady hiring occurs across all five boroughs as well as in suburban and upstate regions.
Which New York cities have the most licensed practical nurse jobs?
Rochester, Syracuse, and Buffalo have the most licensed practical nurse openings in New York. New York City dominates the distribution because of its concentration of hospital systems, long-term care facilities, and home health agencies, while Buffalo and Albany reflect strong regional demand driven by large health systems and a growing senior population in upstate communities.
Are there remote licensed practical nurse jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're rare. Licensed practical nursing is a hands-on clinical role, so the overwhelming majority of positions require in-person patient care. About 0% of licensed practical nurse openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those tend to be in telephonic triage, care coordination, or utilization review roles that don't involve direct bedside care.
How can I get hired as a licensed practical nurse in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to long-term care and skilled nursing facilities, which consistently hire new-graduate LPNs across New York. Large employers such as NYC Health and Hospitals and Northwell Health offer new-grad orientation programs that provide structured clinical support for candidates with limited experience. Certified nursing assistant experience is a strong differentiator, as it demonstrates hands-on patient care skills and familiarity with the care environment before you've worked an LPN role.
Where can I find and apply to licensed practical nurse jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to licensed practical nurse jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers across the state. Search by city, specialty, or setting to narrow the results to roles that match your experience and availability, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
