ICU Registered Nurse Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a icu registered nurse in Texas?
You become an icu registered nurse in Texas by first earning a nursing degree, either an Associate Degree in Nursing or a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, then passing the NCLEX-RN to obtain your Registered Nurse license through the Texas Board of Nursing. After licensure, most Texas ICU employers require you to gain acute care experience, typically in a medical-surgical or step-down unit, before moving into an intensive care role.
How much do ICU registered nurses make in Texas?
ICU registered nurses in Texas earn a median of about $95,970 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $67,120 for the lowest 10% to over $127,950 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire icu registered nurses in Texas?
Employers hiring icu registered nurses in Texas right now include Baylor Scott & White Health, CHRISTUS Health, and Prime Healthcare Services, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's large integrated health systems, including those operating across multiple metro areas, tend to post consistently and hire in volume for ICU positions throughout the year.
Which Texas cities have the most icu registered nurse jobs?
Plano, San Antonio, and Houston have the most icu registered nurse openings in Texas. Houston's concentration of Level I trauma centers and world-renowned medical institutions like those in the Texas Medical Center drives the largest share of postings, while Dallas and San Antonio reflect the presence of major regional health systems and growing urban populations that sustain high inpatient critical care demand.
Are there remote icu registered nurse jobs in Texas?
Yes, but they're rare. ICU registered nursing is inherently a hands-on, bedside role that requires physical presence with critically ill patients. About 0% of icu registered nurse openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions are almost exclusively in telehealth triage, utilization review, or case management functions rather than direct critical care.
How can I get hired as a icu registered nurse in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to a nurse residency program designed for new graduates, which most large Texas health systems offer specifically to prepare RNs for critical care environments. Baylor Scott & White Health, HCA Healthcare facilities across Texas, and UT Health run structured residency tracks that rotate through ICU settings. Starting in a step-down or progressive care unit at a Texas hospital and requesting an internal transfer to the ICU after gaining floor experience is another well-established route. Holding ACLS certification before applying gives candidates a meaningful edge.
