Mental Health Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a mental health professional in Texas?
Becoming a licensed mental health professional in Texas starts with earning a master's degree in counseling, social work, or psychology from an accredited program. From there, you apply through the Texas State Board of Examiners of Professional Counselors for an LPC-Associate license, complete supervised clinical hours, and pass the National Counselor Examination. Social workers pursue a similar path through the Texas State Board of Social Worker Examiners toward LMSW or LCSW licensure.
Which companies hire mental health professionals in Texas?
Employers hiring mental health professionals in Texas right now include Aspen Dental, Houston Methodist, and LifeStance Health, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's large integrated health systems and community mental health centers create particularly consistent demand across major metros and rural regions.
Which Texas cities have the most mental health jobs?
Houston, Dallas, and San Antonio have the most mental health openings in Texas. The Dallas-Fort Worth and Houston metros drive the highest volume because of their large hospital networks, university health systems, and dense populations requiring community behavioral health services, while San Antonio's strong military community and federally qualified health centers generate steady clinical demand.
Are there remote mental health jobs in Texas?
Yes, and more than most healthcare fields, since telehealth has become a permanent fixture in outpatient counseling and therapy. About 9% of mental health openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how broadly Texas-licensed providers can serve clients across the state via video platforms. Direct crisis services, inpatient roles, and intensive outpatient programs remain largely in-person.
How can I get hired as a mental health professional in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is pursuing an LPC-Associate or LMSW-level position, which Texas law specifically creates for newly licensed clinicians completing supervised hours. Large health systems such as UT Health and Texas Health Resources hire new graduates into associate counselor and case manager roles with built-in supervision structures. Lateral moves from crisis hotline work, psychiatric technician positions, or peer support specialist roles are also common stepping stones that Texas employers recognize favorably.
Where can I find and apply to mental health jobs in Texas?
You can find and apply to mental health jobs in Texas on Migrate Mate, which lists current Texas openings across community health centers, hospital systems, and outpatient practices. Search the roles available, find the ones that fit your license level and specialty, and apply directly without any additional steps.
