Behavioral Health Counselor Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a behavioral health counselor in Texas?
To become a licensed behavioral health counselor in Texas, you must earn a master's degree in counseling or a closely related field, then register with the Texas State Board of Examiners of Professional Counselors as an LPC Associate. As an associate, you complete supervised clinical hours under a board-approved supervisor before sitting for the National Counselor Examination and applying for full Licensed Professional Counselor licensure. Many entry-level roles in Texas accept candidates who are actively working toward licensure as an LPC Associate.
Which companies hire behavioral health counselors in Texas?
Employers hiring behavioral health counselors in Texas right now include Management & Training Corporation, IDEA Public Schools, and LifeStance Health, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's large hospital systems, county-funded community mental health centers, and school district contractors account for a significant share of ongoing openings across the state.
Which Texas cities have the most behavioral health counselor jobs?
Austin, Houston, and San Antonio have the most behavioral health counselor openings in Texas. Houston and Dallas-Fort Worth lead because of their large hospital systems, veteran-focused programs, and dense community mental health networks, while San Antonio's concentration of military installations and associated behavioral health contracts drives consistent demand there as well.
Are there remote behavioral health counselor jobs in Texas?
Yes, and more than most clinical fields, because telehealth has been widely adopted for outpatient counseling. About 6% of behavioral health counselor openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the growth of virtual therapy platforms and telepsychiatry programs. Individual and group therapy delivered via secure video platforms accounts for most of the remote work available in this role.
How can I get hired as a behavioral health counselor in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is registering as an LPC Associate with the Texas State Board of Examiners of Professional Counselors, which allows you to work in supervised clinical roles while you accumulate required hours. Large Texas employers such as community mental health authorities, school district contracted providers, and state-funded substance use treatment facilities routinely hire LPC Associates and case managers as a pipeline into full counselor roles. Adjacent positions like mental health technician, peer support specialist, or case manager can also open the door, and completing a Texas-recognized supervised practicum placement during graduate school strengthens any application.
