Behavioral Health Counselor Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a behavioral health counselor in New York?
The path depends on which credential you pursue. New York State licenses behavioral health counselors primarily through the Office of the Professions, which oversees the Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) and Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) designations, each requiring a qualifying master's degree and supervised clinical hours. Substance use counselors pursue the Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC) credential through the New York State Office of Addiction Services and Supports.
Which companies hire behavioral health counselors in New York?
Employers hiring behavioral health counselors in New York right now include Good Shepherd Services, LifeStance Health, and Nicholas H. Noyes Memorial Hospital, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's dense concentration of hospital systems, federally qualified health centers, and nonprofit community mental health agencies means a wide range of employer types are consistently active in this market.
Which New York cities have the most behavioral health counselor jobs?
The cities with the most behavioral health counselor openings in New York are New York, Brooklyn, and Bronx. New York City dominates the distribution given the scale of its hospital networks, community health centers, and public mental health infrastructure, while Albany and Buffalo draw consistent demand from regional hospital systems, state agency offices, and county-run behavioral health programs.
Are there remote behavioral health counselor jobs in New York?
Yes, but they are less common than in purely desk-based fields since much of the work involves direct client contact. About 16% of behavioral health counselor openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting a meaningful but selective subset of the market. Telehealth therapy, care coordination, and utilization review roles are the positions most likely to offer fully remote arrangements.
How can I get hired as a behavioral health counselor in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through a supervised internship or practicum placement completed during your master's program, which many New York employers count toward the post-degree hours required for licensure. Large systems like NYC Health + Hospitals and Northwell Health regularly bring on pre-licensed clinicians for associate or clinician-in-training roles. Coming in as a case manager, peer support specialist, or crisis intervention worker at a community mental health agency is another common route, and having your CASAC-Trainee status or provisional LMSW already in hand gives a meaningful edge over candidates who are still pending.
Where can I find and apply to behavioral health counselor jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to behavioral health counselor jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Search the listings, find roles that match your credentials and experience level, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
