Primary Care Physician Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a primary care physician in New York?
To practice as a primary care physician in New York, you must hold a medical degree from an accredited institution, complete an accredited residency in a primary care specialty such as family medicine or internal medicine, and obtain a license from the New York State Education Department through its Office of the Professions. New York also requires a separate Controlled Substance registration and a DEA registration before you can prescribe. Board certification, while not mandated by the state, is required by most New York hospital credentialing committees.
Which companies hire primary care physicians in New York?
Employers hiring primary care physicians in New York right now include Sun River Health, Wyckoff Heights Medical Center, and Physician Affiliate Group of New York, P.C. (PAGNY), based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's market is anchored by large integrated health systems and a substantial network of federally qualified health centers that collectively maintain some of the highest volumes of primary care physician openings in the state year-round.
Which New York cities have the most primary care physician jobs?
New York, Bronx, and Queens have the most primary care physician openings in New York. New York City dominates the distribution because of the sheer concentration of large academic medical centers, municipal health facilities, and community health networks, while Buffalo and Albany generate steady demand through regional anchor systems and state-affiliated institutions that serve large surrounding populations outside the metro core.
Are there remote primary care physician jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're rare. Primary care medicine is fundamentally a hands-on clinical role, and most positions require in-person patient contact. About 2% of primary care physician openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those that do exist are largely telehealth-specific roles focused on chronic disease follow-up, behavioral health integration, or after-hours urgent care coverage rather than full-scope primary care practice.
How can I get hired as a primary care physician in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying directly to residency-to-practice pipeline programs, as large New York systems such as Northwell Health and Montefiore Medical Center actively recruit physicians completing their final residency year for employed attending positions. Federally qualified health centers across New York City and upstate communities also hire early-career physicians and often provide loan repayment incentives. Candidates who hold National Health Service Corps eligibility or have completed a New York-based residency program carry a meaningful advantage in competitive urban markets.
Where can I find and apply to primary care physician jobs in New York?
