Primary Care Physician Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a primary care physician in California?
To practice as a primary care physician in California, you must hold an active license issued by the Medical Board of California, which requires completing an accredited medical degree, finishing a residency program in a primary care specialty such as family medicine or internal medicine, and passing the USMLE or COMLEX licensing examinations. California also requires physicians to complete a one-time course in pain management and end-of-life care as a condition of initial licensure.
Which companies hire primary care physicians in California?
Employers hiring primary care physicians in California right now include CommonSpirit Health, Carbon Health, and Welbe Health, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's density of large integrated health systems, federally qualified health centers, and multi-specialty group practices means hiring activity is distributed across both major metros and underserved rural communities throughout the state.
Which California cities have the most primary care physician jobs?
Novato, San Francisco, and Carmichael are the California cities with the most primary care physician openings, driven by the concentration of large academic medical centers, regional health systems, and community health networks anchored in those metro areas, while some listings in smaller cities reflect recruitment incentives for underserved or federally designated shortage areas that draw physicians away from the most competitive urban markets.
Are there remote primary care physician jobs in California?
Yes, but they're rare. Primary care medicine is fundamentally a hands-on clinical discipline, so most positions require in-person patient care. About 0% of primary care physician openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those roles are almost exclusively in telemedicine, utilization management, or physician advisory capacities rather than traditional panel-based practice.
How can I get hired as a primary care physician in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying directly from residency graduation, as California employers such as Kaiser Permanente, the County of Los Angeles Department of Health Services, and federally qualified health centers like AltaMed Health Services actively recruit new graduates into employed physician roles. Completing a fellowship, obtaining board certification immediately after residency, and holding an active Medical Board of California license before applying all strengthen candidacy for entry-level attending positions across the state.
Where can I find and apply to primary care physician jobs in California?
You can find and apply to primary care physician jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings across health systems, community clinics, and medical groups. Find roles that fit your specialty, experience level, and preferred region of California, then apply directly to the employers posting those positions.
