Gastroenterologist Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a gastroenterologist in California?
Becoming a gastroenterologist in California requires completing medical school, an internal medicine residency, and a gastroenterology fellowship, then obtaining a Physician and Surgeon license from the Medical Board of California. The licensing process requires passing the USMLE sequence and submitting a verified application through the Board. Most California health systems also require ABIM board certification or active eligibility before a candidate can practice independently.
How much do gastroenterologists make in California?
Gastroenterologists in California earn a median of about $313,890 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $74,180 for the lowest 10% to over $441,710 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire gastroenterologists in California?
Employers hiring gastroenterologists in California right now include The Permanente Medical Group, CommonSpirit Health, and University of California, San Francisco, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's concentration of large integrated systems and academic medical centers means many openings come with faculty appointments or research components alongside clinical responsibilities.
Which California cities have the most gastroenterologist jobs?
The cities with the most gastroenterologist openings in California are Fresno, San Francisco, and Vacaville. Los Angeles and San Francisco anchor demand through their dense networks of academic medical centers and large multispecialty groups, while San Diego's strong biotech and Veterans Affairs presence drives consistent GI hiring in that market.
Are there remote gastroenterologist jobs in California?
Yes, but they're rare. Gastroenterology is a hands-on procedural specialty, so most roles require in-person patient care and endoscopy. About 0% of gastroenterologist openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions typically involve telemedicine consultations, second-opinion reads, or administrative and quality-improvement work rather than full procedural practice.
How can I get hired as a gastroenterologist in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying directly out of fellowship, as California's major systems including Kaiser Permanente, UC San Diego Health, and UCSF actively recruit new fellowship graduates into structured onboarding programs. Candidates can strengthen their position by completing a fellowship at a California-affiliated program, obtaining their Medical Board of California license early, and seeking locum tenens assignments at California community hospitals to build procedural volume before committing to a permanent role.
