Dietitian Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a dietitian in California?
To practice as a dietitian in California you must hold a license issued by the California Board of Registered Dietitians. The path starts with earning a bachelor's or master's degree from an accredited nutrition program, completing a supervised dietetic internship, and passing the Commission on Dietetic Registration exam to earn the Registered Dietitian Nutritionist credential. California then requires you to apply for and maintain an active state license through the Board of Registered Dietitians before seeing patients or clients.
How much do dietitians make in California?
Dietitians in California earn a median of about $98,850 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $72,780 for the lowest 10% to over $130,850 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire dietitians in California?
Employers hiring dietitians in California right now include DaVita, Fresenius Medical Care, and Sodexo, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's concentration of large integrated health systems, public hospital networks, and university medical centers means consistent year-round openings across both acute care and outpatient settings.
Which California cities have the most dietitian jobs?
Los Angeles, San Diego, and Inglewood have the most dietitian openings in California. Los Angeles and San Diego generate the highest volume through their dense hospital networks and public health infrastructure, while San Francisco's concentration of academic medical centers and tech-sector corporate wellness programs sustains strong demand even in a smaller metro footprint.
Are there remote dietitian jobs in California?
Yes, but they're less common than in desk-based fields because most dietitian work involves direct patient contact in clinical or community settings. About 9% of dietitian openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, with telehealth nutrition counseling and health coaching roles being the positions most likely to offer fully remote arrangements.
How can I get hired as a dietitian in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying directly to new-graduate clinical nutrition positions at large California health systems, which run structured onboarding programs designed for candidates finishing their dietetic internship. Kaiser Permanente and Dignity Health, among others, regularly post associate or staff dietitian roles that accept new credentialed graduates. Building experience in a community health center or school nutrition program is another concrete entry point. Holding an active California Board of Registered Dietitians license before you apply puts you ahead of candidates still waiting for credentialing.
Where can I find and apply to dietitian jobs in California?
You can find and apply to dietitian jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings from hospitals, outpatient clinics, public health agencies, and other employers. Find roles that fit your specialty and experience level and apply directly.
