Orthopedic Surgeon Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become an orthopedic surgeon in California?
You must hold an active Physician and Surgeon license issued by the Medical Board of California, which requires graduation from an accredited medical school, completion of an accredited orthopedic surgery residency, and passage of all three steps of the USMLE or the COMLEX-USA series. California does not offer a separate endorsement pathway for orthopedic surgeons, so all applicants go through the same Medical Board licensure process before seeking hospital privileges or group practice credentialing.
How much do orthopedic surgeons make in California?
Orthopedic surgeons in California earn a median of about $253,430 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $80,660 for the lowest 10% to over $457,010 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire orthopedic surgeons in California?
Employers hiring orthopedic surgeons in California right now include CommonSpirit Health, Spectrum Healthcare Resources, and Sutter Health, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's size means openings appear across large integrated systems, university health networks, and independent multispecialty groups concentrated in the major metros.
Which California cities have the most orthopedic surgeon jobs?
Sacramento, Davis, and Fresno have the most orthopedic surgeon openings in California. Los Angeles leads because of its sheer population and the density of major hospital systems and academic centers anchored there, while San Francisco and San Diego reflect the strength of UC health networks and large regional health systems that support high-volume orthopedic programs.
Are there remote orthopedic surgeon jobs in California?
Yes, but they are rare. Orthopedic surgery is a hands-on procedural specialty requiring direct patient contact, operating room access, and on-site imaging review, which limits remote options to a narrow slice of the field. About 0% of orthopedic surgeon openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026. The roles most likely to carry a remote or hybrid component involve telemedicine consultations, post-operative follow-up visits, or second-opinion review rather than primary surgical practice.
How can I get hired as an orthopedic surgeon in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is securing a fellowship position at a California academic medical center immediately after residency, which converts directly to an attending role at the same institution for many candidates. Large California health systems such as Cedars-Sinai, UC San Diego Health, and Stanford Health Care run structured new-attending onboarding programs for fellowship graduates and occasionally offer employed positions to final-year residents. Candidates without fellowship training can improve competitiveness by pursuing provisional privileges at community hospitals in high-need regions such as the Central Valley or Inland Empire, where orthopedic access gaps create openings for early-career surgeons. Board certification candidacy status and an active California medical license are the minimum credentials that open these doors.
Where can I find and apply to orthopedic surgeon jobs in California?
You can find and apply to orthopedic surgeon jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings across health systems, academic medical centers, and multispecialty groups. Find roles that fit your specialty, training level, and preferred region, then apply directly to the employer through the listing.
