Orthopedic Surgeon Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become an orthopedic surgeon in New York?
To practice as an orthopedic surgeon in New York, you must hold an active medical license issued by the New York State Education Department through the Office of the Professions. This requires completing medical school, a five-year accredited orthopedic surgery residency, and passing the USMLE steps. Most positions also expect board certification through the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. Many New York employers additionally require or strongly prefer fellowship training in a subspecialty.
How much do orthopedic surgeons make in New York?
Orthopedic surgeons in New York earn a median of about $414,290 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $77,150 for the lowest 10% to over $619,340 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire orthopedic surgeons in New York?
Employers hiring orthopedic surgeons in New York right now include Garnet Health, Guthrie, and Newark Wayne Community Hospital, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's concentration of academic medical centers and large integrated health systems means many openings come with research, teaching, or subspecialty program affiliations.
Which New York cities have the most orthopedic surgeon jobs?
The cities with the most orthopedic surgeon openings in New York are Middletown, Rochester, and Buffalo. New York City dominates hiring because of its dense cluster of academic medical centers, trauma hospitals, and sports medicine practices, while Buffalo and Albany draw consistent demand from regional health systems like Kaleida Health and Albany Med that serve large upstate populations.
Are there remote orthopedic surgeon jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're rare. Orthopedic surgery is an inherently hands-on, procedural specialty that requires physical presence for examinations, procedures, and surgical cases. About 0% of orthopedic surgeon openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions typically involve telehealth consultations, pre-operative assessments, or post-operative follow-up rather than surgical work itself.
How can I get hired as an orthopedic surgeon in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is securing a residency or fellowship position at a New York academic medical center, which serves as the structured on-ramp into attending practice. Institutions like NYU Langone Health, NewYork-Presbyterian, and the Hospital for Special Surgery run competitive residency and fellowship programs that lead directly to staff roles. Newly licensed surgeons without independent experience often enter through junior attending or locum tenens positions, and obtaining New York board eligibility status early gives candidates a meaningful edge in the application process.
