Mental Health Counselor Jobs in Florida: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a mental health counselor in Florida?
To become a licensed mental health counselor in Florida, you must earn a master's degree in mental health counseling or a closely related field from an accredited program, complete supervised clinical hours as required by the Florida Department of Health, and pass the National Counselor Examination or the National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Examination. Licensure is issued and overseen by the Florida Board of Clinical Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy, and Mental Health Counseling, which also governs renewals and continuing education requirements.
Which companies hire mental health counselors in Florida?
Employers hiring mental health counselors in Florida right now include LifeStance Health, Chrysalis Health, and FL, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Florida's large integrated health systems, community mental health centers, and nonprofit behavioral health organizations account for a significant share of consistent openings across the state.
Which Florida cities have the most mental health counselor jobs?
Jacksonville, Orlando, and Miami have the most mental health counselor openings in Florida. Miami leads because of its large and densely populated metro with extensive community mental health infrastructure, while Orlando and Tampa generate high volume through major hospital systems and a growing network of outpatient behavioral health clinics that have expanded steadily over the past several years.
Are there remote mental health counselor jobs in Florida?
Yes, and more than in most healthcare roles, because teletherapy has become a widely accepted delivery model for outpatient counseling. About 52% of mental health counselor openings tied to Florida are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting how broadly telehealth has been integrated into both private practices and larger behavioral health organizations. Individual therapy and intake assessments are the parts of the role most commonly conducted remotely.
How can I get hired as a mental health counselor in Florida with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for a registered intern position while completing the supervised hours required for Florida LMHC licensure. Large Florida employers such as BayCare Health System, Centerstone, and community mental health centers operated through Florida's managing entity network regularly hire registered interns and associate-level clinicians. Case manager and behavioral health technician roles at these same organizations are common lateral moves that provide clinical exposure and often lead directly to counselor openings once licensure is obtained.
Where can I find and apply to mental health counselor jobs in Florida?
You can find and apply to mental health counselor jobs in Florida on Migrate Mate, which lists current Florida openings from employers actively hiring in the state. Find roles that match your experience and specialization and apply directly to each one.
