Tips for Your Dermatopathologist Job Search
Align your fellowship training to the opening
Postings often specify whether the role leans toward surgical dermatopathology, inflammatory conditions, or high-volume referral work. Match the language in your CV summary to what the posting emphasizes, so reviewers see the fit immediately without reading between the lines.
Quantify your sign-out volume on your CV
Labs screen candidates by case throughput. State your average weekly slide count and case mix from fellowship or current practice. Reviewers in high-volume reference labs weigh this more heavily than your publication list when assessing day-one readiness.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists dermatopathologist openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Target academic versus private group openings differently
Academic postings reward research output, teaching history, and board participation. Private group and reference lab postings prioritize turnaround time, remote sign-out capability, and EHR or LIS platform experience. Tailor your materials to the practice model, not just the specialty.
Prepare a case presentation for the working interview
Many practices invite finalists to a working interview where you sign out cases with a current staff pathologist. Review your approach to diagnostically challenging melanocytic lesions and T-cell lymphomas beforehand, since those tend to surface in informal assessments.
Negotiate scope before discussing compensation
Clarify your expected case mix, call coverage rotation, frozen section obligations, and remote sign-out percentage before compensation talks begin. These workflow factors affect daily practice more durably than starting pay and are easier to negotiate before an offer is formalized.
Dermatopathologist Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most dermatopathologists?
The companies hiring the most dermatopathologists right now include Quest Diagnostics, Harvard Medical Faculty Physicians at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and Labcorp, with the largest share of openings in Indiana, Florida, and Massachusetts, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Demand is concentrated among large reference laboratories, academic health systems, and multisite dermatology group practices that maintain in-house pathology services.
How many dermatopathologist jobs are remote?
About 0% of dermatopathologist openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting broader adoption of digital whole-slide imaging platforms across reference labs and academic centers. Remote and hybrid arrangements are most common in high-volume reference laboratory roles where sign-out is digital, and least common in positions that include frozen section coverage or direct clinic integration.
How do you become a dermatopathologist?
You become a dermatopathologist by completing medical school, then a residency in anatomic pathology, followed by a one-year ACGME-accredited dermatopathology fellowship. After fellowship you sit for board certification in dermatopathology through the American Board of Pathology. Some candidates pursue the fellowship through a dermatology residency pathway instead of pathology, which leads to the same board examination.
How do you get hired as a dermatopathologist with limited experience?
Candidates with limited post-fellowship experience can strengthen their applications by emphasizing fellowship case volume, subspecialty rotations, and any published or presented case series. Applying to high-volume reference labs or large health system positions where structured mentorship exists gives early-career dermatopathologists the supervised caseload diversity that builds the independent sign-out confidence hiring committees look for.
What does the dermatopathologist interview process look like?
The process typically begins with a phone or video screen with a department chair or practice administrator, followed by an on-site visit that includes a working session where you review slides with current staff. You may also meet with clinic leadership, a lab director, and administrative staff. Academic roles often include a presentation on research interests, while private group interviews focus on workflow fit and productivity expectations.
Where can I find and apply to dermatopathologist jobs?
You can find and apply to dermatopathologist jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Find roles that match your training, practice model preference, and location, then apply directly to each listing. No intermediary step is required between finding a role and submitting your application.
