Tips for Your X-Ray Tech Job Search
List every modality you've operated
Hiring managers scan for specific equipment names, not just 'radiography.' Call out the exact units you've used, whether that's portable C-arms, fixed fluoroscopy tables, or mobile chest units, so your resume clears automated screening for those terms.
Show ARRT credentials prominently
Put your ARRT certification, state licensure, and any added modality certs right below your name, not buried in a skills section. Recruiters in radiology check credentials before they read your work history, so front-loading them saves your application from early dismissal.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists x-ray tech openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Target job titles beyond X-Ray Tech
Many hospitals post the same role as Radiologic Technologist, Rad Tech, or Diagnostic Imaging Tech. Search all three variations so you don't miss openings that match your skills just because the title is written differently.
Prepare for a skills competency check
Most imaging departments ask candidates to demonstrate patient positioning or walk through a safety protocol scenario before a formal offer. Review your clinical competency documentation and be ready to describe exactly how you handle pediatric or trauma positioning under pressure.
Negotiate shift differentials, not just base pay
X-ray tech roles often carry evening, night, and weekend differentials that significantly change total compensation. When an offer comes, ask specifically about per-diem rates, call-back pay, and differential structures before accepting, since these vary widely by facility type.
X-Ray Tech Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most x-ray techs?
The companies hiring the most x-ray techs right now include NYU Langone Health, Ascension, and Rhode Island Medical Imaging, with the largest share of openings in New York, Illinois, and Florida, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Large health systems and national imaging chains consistently post the highest volume of openings year-round.
How many x-ray tech jobs are remote?
About 2% of x-ray tech openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how hands-on patient care limits remote options for most imaging roles. Teleradiology-adjacent support roles and radiology education or quality assurance positions are the sub-areas where remote or hybrid arrangements appear most frequently.
How do you become a x-ray tech?
You complete an accredited radiologic technology program, which typically combines classroom instruction with clinical rotations covering patient positioning, radiation physics, and imaging procedures. After graduating, you pass the ARRT exam to earn national certification. Most states then require a separate state license before you can practice, so check your state's specific requirements before applying.
Can you get hired as a x-ray tech with little experience?
Yes, many hospitals and imaging centers hire new graduates as registry-eligible techs while they complete their ARRT exam. Emphasizing your clinical rotation hours, the volume of procedures you completed, and any specialized positioning training you received helps offset a short work history. Per-diem and weekend-only roles are also common entry points that build experience quickly.
What does the x-ray tech interview process look like?
Most facilities start with a phone or video screen to verify credentials and availability, followed by an in-person interview with the radiology supervisor or department manager. You'll typically be asked to describe your positioning technique for common exams, how you handle uncooperative or pediatric patients, and your approach to radiation safety. Some departments also conduct a brief practical skills assessment before extending an offer.
Where can I find and apply to x-ray tech jobs?
You can find and apply to x-ray tech jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Search the listings for roles that match your credentials and preferred location, then apply directly to each one that fits your background and availability.
