Tips for Your Orthopedic Physician Assistant Job Search
Tailor your resume to surgical subspecialties
Orthopedic PA hiring managers scan for subspecialty exposure fast. List specific procedures you've assisted or managed independently, such as total knee arthroplasty first assists, fracture reductions, or arthroscopic post-op management, not just general surgical support.
Highlight your first-assist certification separately
If you hold a Certificate of Added Qualifications in Surgery or a first-assist credential, put it in its own line near the top of your resume. Many orthopedic job postings filter on this before reading anything else in your application.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists orthopedic physician assistant openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Target postings by patient volume and setting
High-volume trauma centers, outpatient sports medicine practices, and private orthopedic surgery groups each demand a different skill mix. Read the job description for language like 'rounding,' 'post-op visits,' or 'OR first-assist' to confirm the role matches your hands-on experience before applying.
Prepare case examples for behavioral interviews
Orthopedic interviewers routinely ask how you managed a complex post-op complication or handled a difficult patient conversation after a poor surgical outcome. Prepare two or three specific patient scenarios you can describe concisely without violating confidentiality.
Negotiate call schedule and autonomy before accepting
Before signing, ask explicitly about overnight call frequency, post-op rounding expectations, and your scope of practice in the OR. These vary dramatically between groups and affect daily workload far more than base compensation structure does.
Orthopedic Physician Assistant Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most orthopedic physician assistants?
The companies hiring the most orthopedic physician assistants right now include Atrium Health, CommonSpirit Health, and Novant Health, with the largest share of openings in North Carolina, California, and Arizona, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Hospital systems and large orthopedic surgery groups tend to post the highest volume of openings.
How many orthopedic physician assistant jobs are remote?
About 0% of orthopedic physician assistant openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, since most of the role requires in-person patient care and surgical presence. The sub-areas most likely to allow remote work include telemedicine follow-up visits, pre-operative patient counseling, and medical documentation review roles.
How do you become an orthopedic physician assistant?
You complete an accredited master's-level PA program, pass the PANCE to earn NCCPA certification, and obtain a state PA license. From there, you pursue orthopedic-specific experience through clinical rotations, a PA surgical residency or fellowship if available, and hands-on first-assist opportunities. Many orthopedic PAs also pursue the Certificate of Added Qualifications in Surgery after accumulating sufficient surgical case volume.
Can you get hired as an orthopedic physician assistant with little experience?
Yes, some orthopedic groups and hospital systems hire new-grad PAs if you completed a surgical or orthopedic rotation during your PA program. Your rotation case log, any first-assist experience, and strong letters from supervising orthopedic surgeons carry significant weight. Larger health systems with formal PA onboarding programs are generally more willing to train new graduates than small private practices.
What does the orthopedic physician assistant interview process look like?
Most orthopedic PA interviews start with a phone screen from HR or a practice administrator, followed by an in-person or video interview with the supervising orthopedic surgeon or group partners. You'll typically discuss your surgical case experience, scope of practice comfort level, and how you handle post-operative complications. Some groups ask you to observe a clinic day or OR case before an offer is extended.
Where can I find and apply to orthopedic physician assistant jobs?
You can find and apply to orthopedic physician assistant jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Find roles that match your subspecialty experience and preferred setting, then apply directly to each listing from the page.
