Design Engineer Jobs in Houston: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a design engineer job in Houston?
Target the Energy Corridor and Greenspoint for oil and gas and petrochemical roles, and the Texas Medical Center for biomedical and facilities engineering. Candidates with experience in SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or PDMS and familiarity with ASME or API standards stand out in Houston's industrial market. Internships with EPC firms or refineries give entry-level applicants a clear edge in landing their first full-time role here.
Which companies hire design engineers in Houston?
Employers hiring design engineers in Houston right now include Fluor, Intuitive Machines, and AECOM, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Houston's market is anchored by major energy operators and engineering, procurement, and construction firms, alongside aerospace contractors and industrial equipment manufacturers concentrated along the Ship Channel and in the northwest suburbs.
Are there remote design engineer jobs in Houston?
Yes, though design engineer roles that require hands-on prototyping, lab work, or plant-floor collaboration are rarely fully remote. About 56% of design engineer openings tied to Houston are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, with remote work most common in roles focused on CAD drafting, systems design, or technical documentation rather than fabrication or field-site work.
How can I get a design engineer job in Houston with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in Houston is targeting co-op or junior engineer roles at EPC firms or mid-size oil and gas equipment suppliers, where structured onboarding is common. Companies in the Energy Corridor frequently hire recent graduates from University of Houston or Texas A&M into rotational programs. Building proficiency in CAD tools and earning an Engineer-in-Training designation strengthens any entry-level application in this market.
