Development Director Jobs in Oklahoma: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a development director in Oklahoma?
Most development directors in Oklahoma move into the role after several years in fundraising, grant writing, or donor relations at a nonprofit or higher education institution. Oklahoma does not require a state-issued license for this role. Employers consistently favor candidates with a bachelor's degree in a related field and a record of closing major gifts or leading successful campaigns. The Certified Fund Raising Executive credential, administered nationally, carries significant weight with Oklahoma hiring managers and can accelerate advancement.
Which companies hire development directors in Oklahoma?
Companies currently hiring development directors in Oklahoma include Surgery Partners, Ryder System, and The Salvation Army, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Oklahoma's largest employers in this space tend to be university foundations, regional health systems, and established nonprofits headquartered in Oklahoma City and Tulsa.
Which Oklahoma cities have the most development director jobs?
Tulsa, Oklahoma City, and Ada account for the most development director openings in Oklahoma. Oklahoma City leads because it is home to the state's largest nonprofit organizations, health systems, and university foundations, while Tulsa's strong philanthropic culture and corporate headquarters generate consistent demand, and smaller metros like Norman and Edmond draw openings tied to university campuses and suburban community organizations.
Are there remote development director jobs in Oklahoma?
Yes, though they are less common than in purely desk-based fields, since development directors spend meaningful time cultivating donors in person and attending community events. About 43% of development director openings tied to Oklahoma are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting a moderate shift toward flexible arrangements. The parts of the role most suited to remote work include grant writing, reporting, and database management rather than frontline donor engagement.
How can I get hired as a development director in Oklahoma with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is starting as a development associate, major gifts coordinator, or grants coordinator at a mid-size Oklahoma nonprofit or university foundation, then building toward director-level responsibility over time. Institutions such as the University of Oklahoma Foundation and Oklahomans for the Arts regularly hire for entry and mid-level development roles that serve as pipelines into director positions. Earning the Associate level of the Certified Fund Raising Executive credential early and volunteering on a local nonprofit board strengthens a candidacy significantly before making the jump to director.
Where can I find and apply to development director jobs in Oklahoma?
