Development Director Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a development director in Texas?
Most development directors in Texas enter the field through fundraising coordinator or major gifts officer roles and advance over several years. Texas employers typically look for a bachelor's degree and progressively responsible development experience. While no state-issued license is required, earning the Certified Fund Raising Executive credential through CFRE International demonstrates professional standing and is widely recognized by Texas nonprofit employers, hospitals, and universities when hiring at the director level.
Which companies hire development directors in Texas?
Employers hiring development directors in Texas right now include Alvarez & Marsal, CVS Health, and IDEA Public Schools, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's large concentration of nonprofit health systems, research universities, and community foundations makes it one of the more active states for this role year-round.
Which Texas cities have the most development director jobs?
Dallas, Houston, and Austin have the most development director openings in Texas. Houston and Dallas dominate because of their dense concentrations of major hospital systems, corporate foundations, and established nonprofit organizations, while Austin's rapid institutional growth in higher education and civic nonprofits has made it a consistent third market for this role.
Are there remote development director jobs in Texas?
Yes, but they are less common than in purely desk-based fields, since development directors often need to meet donors, attend events, and work closely with leadership on-site. About 26% of development director openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026. The parts of the role most suited to remote work include grant writing, donor research, and portfolio management.
How can I get hired as a development director in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is starting as a development coordinator or annual fund associate at a Texas hospital foundation, university, or mid-size nonprofit, then building toward a director role over three to five years. Large Texas institutions such as UT Health, Texas Children's Hospital, and United Way affiliates across the state regularly hire entry-level development staff. Building a portfolio of successful grant proposals or running a donor acquisition campaign independently also signals readiness to Texas hiring managers.
Where can I find and apply to development director jobs in Texas?
You can find and apply to development director jobs in Texas on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Find roles that fit your experience and apply directly.
