Development Director Jobs in Houston: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a development director job in Houston?
Houston's strongest hiring comes from its sprawling nonprofit community, major hospital systems in the Texas Medical Center, and energy companies downtown and along the Energy Corridor. Candidates who stand out typically bring major gifts or capital campaign experience and local donor network connections. Volunteering with Houston-area community foundations or arts organizations builds visibility with decision-makers and signals genuine commitment to the city's philanthropic landscape.
Which companies hire development directors in Houston?
Houston development director roles are posted by IQVIA, UTHealth Houston, and Houston Methodist and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Houston's employer mix is especially deep in healthcare systems, independent schools, and social services organizations, with a growing number of corporate foundation roles tied to the city's energy and petrochemical industry.
Are there remote development director jobs in Houston?
Yes, though development director work is relationship-driven and often requires in-person donor meetings, making fully remote roles less common than in purely desk-based fields. About 64% of development director openings tied to Houston are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, with flexibility most often found in grant writing, foundation relations, and planned giving functions rather than frontline major gifts roles.
How can I get a development director job in Houston with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is moving up from a development associate or annual fund coordinator role at a Houston nonprofit, hospital foundation, or independent school. Organizations like United Way of Greater Houston and smaller neighborhood-focused nonprofits in Montrose and the Heights regularly hire entry-level development staff and promote internally. Building a portfolio of successful grant applications or event fundraising results accelerates the move into director-level responsibility.
Which industries hire the most development directors in Houston?
Most development director openings in Houston sit in Consulting & Professional Services, Energy, and Education, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Houston's scale as a global energy hub and home to the Texas Medical Center, one of the world's largest medical complexes, drives unusually high demand from hospital foundations, research institutions, and energy-affiliated corporate giving programs.
