Position Summary
Albuquerque Little Theatre seeks an experienced Technical & Facilities Director to oversee all technical and facility operations for productions, education programs, rentals, and special events. This hands-on leadership position manages technical production, scenic construction, shop operations, building maintenance, and facility improvements while ensuring a safe, efficient, and welcoming environment for artists, volunteers, patrons, and renters. The ideal candidate is a hands-on leader who enjoys solving problems, maintaining complex technical systems, mentoring volunteers, and collaborating with artists and staff. They take ownership of the theatre's physical assets, anticipate maintenance needs before failures occur, communicate effectively, and contribute to a positive, high-performing production culture.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead all technical production activities from pre-production through strike.
- Oversee scenic construction, shop operations, production logistics, and all technical systems.
- Manage the maintenance, repair, cleanliness, security, and readiness of the theatre's equipment, buildings, grounds, and production spaces.
- Coordinate preventative maintenance, capital improvements, vendor services, and facility projects with the Executive Director.
- Coordinate all rental logistics with the Rentals Manager.
- Supervise all technical staff, volunteers, interns, and contractors.
- Maintain all lighting and sound equipment, tools, inventories, and production budgets.
- Provide technical support and oversight for rentals, special events, and education programs.
- Ensure compliance with theatre safety standards and applicable building regulations.
- Collaborate with artistic and administrative staff to deliver productions safely, on schedule, and within budget.
- Participate in production crews as assigned and attend technical rehearsals, production meetings, and performances.
- Other duties as assigned by the Artistic Director or Executive Director.
Qualifications
- Bachelors Degree or higher in Theatre, preferred.
- Experience in technical direction, scenic construction, facilities management, or theatre operations, preferred.
- Expertise in at least one of the following areas of technical theatre: theatrical lighting and design, theatrical sound and design, scenic construction and design, or master carpentry.
- Strong leadership, organizational, budgeting, and project management skills.
- Working knowledge of theatrical lighting, sound, rigging, stagecraft, building systems, shop tools, and maintenance practices.
- Experience supervising staff, volunteers, and contractors.
- Ability to work evenings and weekends during productions and special events.
- Ability to take initiative to problem-solve and proactively be part of a production team that is interdependent and high-performing.
Schedule
- Full-time, on-site position.
- Evening and weekend availability are required throughout the production season.
Physical Demands
The role of the Techncial & Facilities Director requires the agility to participate in team facility physical organization and artistic/production needs.
Work Environment
Some features of the work environment will include: Dedicated desk space in the work shop, computer screen time, background noise, and multiple collaborative workspaces. Theatre space work involves bright and occasional flashing lights, total darkness, sometimes unexpected sounds, and heights (lifts, scrims, cycs, lights, and catwalks).
