Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding E-3 Visa Sponsorship as a Licensed Marriage And Family Therapist Lmft
Verify your Australian degree meets requirements
U.S. states license LMFTs at the master's level, so confirm your Australian counselling or psychology degree maps to a U.S. master's equivalent. A credential evaluation from a NACES-member agency strengthens your E-3 application and reassures skeptical HR departments.
Target employers with active clinical supervisor roles
Group practices and community mental health centers that hire clinical supervisors already budget for licensed clinicians and understand state licensure timelines. These employers are far more likely to have navigated visa paperwork than solo practitioners who've never sponsored anyone.
Address state licensure gaps before your offer
Most U.S. states won't issue an LMFT license to someone whose foreign degree hasn't been reviewed by the state board. Research your target state's requirements early so your employer files the LCA after you've confirmed a licensure pathway, not before.
Clarify telehealth roles satisfy specialty occupation criteria
Remote LMFT positions can qualify for E-3 if the employer requires a clinical master's degree for the role. Ask hiring managers to confirm the job description explicitly states the degree requirement, since DOL reviews this wording during LCA certification.
Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service to streamline the process
Once you have a signed offer, use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service to handle your LCA and visa paperwork. This matters for LMFT roles where the employer is a small practice with no in-house HR experience managing visa filings.
Negotiate a start date that accounts for consulate timing
Australian consulate appointment availability varies by city. Build at least six to eight weeks between your offer acceptance and your proposed start date so your employer's LCA certification and your visa interview don't create a scheduling conflict that forces a delayed start.

Find Licensed Marriage And Family Therapist Lmft JobsLicensed Marriage And Family Therapist Lmft E-3 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find LMFT jobs in the U.S. that offer E-3 visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is the recommended way to search for LMFT positions with confirmed E-3 sponsorship. General job boards rarely filter by visa type, so you waste time on roles where the employer has never sponsored anyone. Migrate Mate surfaces employers with E-3 filing history, which is especially useful for clinical roles where smaller group practices dominate the market.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does an LMFT role actually qualify as a specialty occupation for the E-3?
Yes, provided the position requires a master's degree or higher in marriage and family therapy, counselling, or a closely related clinical field. The E-3 specialty occupation standard mirrors the H-1B definition: the degree must be a normal requirement for entry into the role. Job descriptions that say 'bachelor's preferred' or list licensure as a substitute for a degree can create problems at the LCA stage, so the job posting needs careful review before filing.
How does the E-3 compare to the H-1B for Australian therapists?
The E-3 has no annual lottery, so you're not gambling on a 25-30% selection chance the way H-1B applicants are. It's available year-round, renews in two-year increments indefinitely, and has a separate 10,500-slot annual allocation that has never been exhausted. For LMFT roles in private practice or community health settings, where employers are often small and reluctant to run a lottery process, the E-3 is a far more practical path.
Can I work as an LMFT in the U.S. while my full state license is pending?
E-3 status is tied to the job offer, not your licensure status, but most employers won't hire a therapist who can't yet bill insurance or see clients independently. Some states offer associate or provisional licenses that let you work under supervision while completing hours. Confirm the state board's process before accepting an offer, since your E-3 approval doesn't automatically resolve a licensure gap.
