E-3 Visa Psychiatrist Jobs
Psychiatrist roles qualify as E-3 specialty occupations, and U.S. demand means sponsorship is attainable at hospitals, community mental health centers, and telehealth groups. The E-3 has no lottery and no annual cap, so your timeline depends on your employer's readiness, not random selection.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding E-3 Visa Sponsorship as a Psychiatrist
Get your ECFMG certification sorted early
U.S. psychiatric residency programs and hospital credentialing require ECFMG certification for internationally trained medical graduates. Start this process months before your job search, as delays in credential verification directly stall your ability to obtain a state medical license and, by extension, your E-3 sponsorship.
Target employers with existing medical staff sponsorship
Large health systems, academic medical centers, and federally qualified health centers regularly sponsor foreign-national physicians. These employers already have immigration counsel and established LCA workflows, which means the E-3 process moves faster than with a first-time sponsor.
Clarify your state license status before the offer stage
Most psychiatry roles require a full, unrestricted state medical license before you can start. Some states offer a limited license for candidates awaiting full licensure, which can support an E-3 application. Confirm the licensing pathway with your prospective employer before signing anything.
Ask specifically about J-1 waiver status during interviews
Many Australian psychiatrists complete U.S. residencies on J-1 visas, which carry a two-year home residency requirement. If that applies to you, confirm the waiver pathway before pursuing an E-3, as the E-3 cannot override an unwaived J-1 obligation.
Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service for the LCA and consulate prep
Psychiatry sponsorship requires a correctly filed LCA with DOL and a precise visa application package. Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service manages the entire process from offer to consulate appointment, so your employer isn't navigating immigration paperwork without specialist support.
Negotiate a start date that accounts for consulate appointment wait times
E-3 visa interviews in Sydney, Melbourne, and Perth can book out several weeks. Build at least four to six weeks of lead time into your proposed start date after the LCA is certified, so your employer isn't holding a position open while you wait for an appointment slot.

Find Psychiatrist JobsPsychiatrist E-3 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find Psychiatrist jobs with E-3 visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for this search. It surfaces U.S. psychiatrist roles at employers with active visa sponsorship history, so you're not cold-applying to organizations that have never navigated the E-3 process. Filtering by specialty and employer type narrows the list to health systems and medical groups already familiar with foreign-national physician sponsorship.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does a Psychiatrist role qualify as an E-3 specialty occupation?
Yes. Psychiatry requires an M.D. or D.O. and completion of a psychiatry residency, which satisfies the E-3 specialty occupation standard that the role requires at minimum a bachelor's degree in a specific field. USCIS and DOL consistently recognize physician roles as qualifying, and the LCA filing for psychiatry is straightforward on the specialty occupation determination.
How does the E-3 compare to the H-1B for psychiatrists?
The E-3 is significantly more practical for Australian psychiatrists. There's no lottery, no annual cap, and no registration period, so you can apply as soon as you have a job offer and a certified LCA. The H-1B has an 85,000-slot annual cap with a lottery, meaning most applicants wait at least a year for a slot, if selected at all. For Australians, the E-3 is the direct route.
Can I work as a locum tenens psychiatrist on an E-3 visa?
Locum tenens arrangements are possible on the E-3, but they require careful structuring. The E-3 is employer-specific, so each placement through a staffing agency technically requires its own LCA and potentially its own visa application. Some staffing agencies hold an umbrella LCA and list multiple hospital clients, but you should confirm this structure with the agency and ensure the LCA covers each actual work location.
