Verify your degree meets specialty occupation
Australian three-year bachelor's degrees in counseling or social work are generally accepted as equivalent to U.S. four-year degrees, but your employer's LCA filing must confirm the role requires that specific degree field, not just any bachelor's.
Target licensed clinical settings over generalist roles
Hospitals, community mental health centers, and Employee Assistance Programs file LCAs regularly and understand specialty occupation requirements. Generalist roles at nonprofits or schools sometimes lack the defined degree requirement that makes a Family Counselor position E-3 visa eligible.
Ask employers about LCA timelines before accepting
DOL certifies most LCAs within seven business days, but your employer must post the LCA notice at the worksite for ten consecutive days before filing. Build that window into your start date negotiation so your sponsorship timeline doesn't delay onboarding.
Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service for end-to-end support
Once you have an offer, use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service to handle your LCA and visa paperwork from start to consulate appointment, including prevailing wage verification and DS-160 preparation specific to counseling roles.
Disclose any state licensure status early
U.S. counseling roles often require state licensure as an LPC, LMFT, or LCSW. Consular officers may ask whether your Australian qualifications satisfy state board requirements, so clarify your licensure pathway with the employer before the visa interview.
Request a new LCA when changing employers or states
If you move to a new employer or transfer to a worksite in a different metropolitan area, your employer must file a fresh LCA with DOL reflecting the new prevailing wage. Your existing E-3 stamp doesn't transfer automatically between sponsoring employers.
E-3 Visa Family Counselor: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find Family Counselor jobs that offer E-3 visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate lists Family Counselor roles from employers with active E-3 and LCA filing history, so you're not cold-applying to organizations unfamiliar with the process. Filtering by sponsorship type saves time and surfaces employers already set up to handle the DOL and USCIS steps your application requires.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does a Family Counselor role qualify as a specialty occupation for E-3 purposes?
Yes, provided the employer's job description requires a bachelor's degree or higher in counseling, social work, psychology, or a closely related field. Roles that list a degree as preferred rather than required can create problems at the consulate, so confirm the job posting and LCA both state the degree requirement as mandatory.
How does the E-3 compare to the H-1B for Family Counselor positions?
The E-3 is available only to Australian citizens but has no lottery and no annual cap, so you can apply any time you have a qualifying offer. The H-1B visa requires winning a lottery with a roughly 25% selection rate before any filing can proceed. For Australians, the E-3 removes the single biggest obstacle that blocks most skilled-worker applicants from obtaining U.S. employment authorization.
Can I transfer my Australian counseling credentials to work in the U.S. on an E-3?
Your Australian qualifications satisfy the E-3 educational requirement, but U.S. states separately govern clinical licensure. Most states require supervised hours completed in the U.S., so you'll likely begin in an associate or supervised role while accruing those hours. Confirm the specific requirements with your destination state's counseling board before accepting an offer, as timelines vary significantly.
