Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding E-3 Visa Sponsorship as a Mental Health Specialist
Verify your degree meets specialty occupation standards
Your Australian bachelor's in psychology or counseling is generally accepted as equivalent to a U.S. four-year degree, but your employer's LCA must document that the role specifically requires that credential, not just any bachelor's degree.
Target employers with prior behavioral health hiring
Hospital systems, community mental health centers, and federally qualified health centers routinely sponsor work visas for licensed clinicians. Search DOL's Foreign Labor Application Gateway to confirm an employer has filed LCAs for comparable roles before applying.
Clarify licensure requirements before accepting an offer
Most U.S. states require separate licensure for mental health practice, and your Australian registration doesn't transfer automatically. Confirm with the employer which interim or provisional license is acceptable during your first E-3 period so sponsorship isn't blocked at the offer stage.
Find Mental Health Specialist roles through Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to search Mental Health Specialist positions where employers are already open to E-3 sponsorship, saving you from cold-pitching the visa to hiring managers who aren't familiar with Australian treaty visas.
Start the LCA filing as soon as you have a written offer
The DOL must certify your LCA before you can schedule a consulate appointment, and the certification window is typically seven business days. Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service to handle your LCA and visa paperwork so nothing delays your start date.
Prepare a clear nonimmigrant intent explanation for your interview
Mental health roles at nonprofits and government-contracted clinics can attract more consular scrutiny about long-term plans. Have concrete answers ready about your intent to return to Australia, since E-3 consular officers assess immigrant intent on every application.

Find Mental Health Specialist JobsMental Health Specialist E-3 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find Mental Health Specialist jobs that offer E-3 visa sponsorship?
Use Migrate Mate to search Mental Health Specialist positions filtered for E-3 sponsorship. Many employers in behavioral health are open to sponsoring Australian candidates but don't advertise it prominently in job postings. Searching a platform built around E-3 eligibility connects you directly with those opportunities without requiring you to manually explain the visa to each recruiter.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does a Mental Health Specialist role qualify as a specialty occupation for the E-3?
Yes, provided the position requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific field such as psychology, social work, counseling, or a closely related discipline. Generic helping-role descriptions that accept any degree can create problems at the LCA stage. Your employer's job description must state that the role requires a specific qualifying degree, not just a preference for one.
How does the E-3 compare to the H-1B for Australian mental health professionals?
The E-3 is far more practical for this role. The H-1B requires surviving an annual lottery with a roughly one-in-four selection rate, while the E-3 has no cap or lottery for Australian nationals. You can apply for an E-3 any time of year once you have a job offer and a certified LCA, and the two-year visa is renewable indefinitely as long as you remain employed in a qualifying role.
Can my employer sponsor my E-3 if I need a provisional license to practice in the U.S.?
Yes, many states issue provisional or supervised practice licenses that satisfy employer requirements during the initial E-3 period. The E-3 itself doesn't require full licensure, but your job offer must still describe duties that constitute a specialty occupation. Confirm with your employer and the relevant state licensing board which interim credential applies before your LCA is filed.
