Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding E-3 Visa Sponsorship as a Mental Health Professional
Verify your license transfers to your target state
U.S. mental health licensure is state-specific. A licensed psychologist or counselor in Australia will need to meet each state's credentialing requirements before starting work, so research reciprocity rules for your target location before applying.
Target employers with established international hiring pipelines
Hospital systems, community mental health centers, and federally qualified health centers hire mental health professionals on E-3 visas regularly. Facilities in underserved areas often have the most urgent hiring needs and the infrastructure to move quickly on sponsorship.
Request an LCA before your start date is finalized
Your employer files a Labor Condition Application with the DOL before you can apply at the consulate. DOL certifies LCAs within seven business days in most cases, so build this step into your offer negotiation timeline to avoid last-minute delays.
Document your Australian qualifications for specialty occupation review
Consular officers assess whether your role qualifies as a specialty occupation. Bring your degree transcripts, your Australian registration or clinical supervision records, and the job description showing that a relevant degree is required for the position.
Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service to coordinate your paperwork
The LCA, DS-160, and consulate preparation involve tight sequencing that's easy to get wrong under pressure. Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service manages the entire process from offer to consulate appointment so nothing falls through the gaps.
Negotiate employer coverage of government filing fees upfront
The employer is responsible for LCA costs and typically covers government visa fees too. Clarify this during offer negotiations rather than after signing, since some smaller practices are unfamiliar with E-3 sponsorship obligations and may need guidance.

Find Mental Health Professional JobsMental Health Professional E-3 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find mental health professional jobs with E-3 visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for Australian professionals searching for E-3 visa sponsorship roles in the United States. You can filter by job title and location to surface mental health positions at employers familiar with the E-3 process, which saves significant time compared to cold-applying and explaining the visa from scratch.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does a mental health professional role qualify as a specialty occupation for E-3?
Yes, roles such as licensed clinical social worker, psychologist, licensed professional counselor, and marriage and family therapist generally qualify because they require at least a bachelor's degree in a directly related field. The job description must reflect that requirement. Roles where any degree suffices, or where clinical training is not required, are unlikely to qualify.
How does the E-3 compare to the H-1B for mental health professionals?
The E-3 has a 10,500 annual allocation that has never been reached, so there is no lottery and no cap risk. The H-1B requires entering a randomized lottery with around a 25 percent selection rate. For Australian mental health professionals, the E-3 is a far more predictable path, and approval can be obtained at the consulate without waiting for USCIS petition processing.
Can I change employers or clinical settings while on an E-3 visa?
Yes, but your new employer must file a fresh LCA with the DOL and you will need a new visa stamp or an amended status before starting work in the new role. The E-3 is employer-specific, so you cannot simply transfer it. If you are already in the United States, a change of status through USCIS is an option, though many applicants return to Australia for a consulate appointment instead.
