Certify your culinary credentials for U.S. review
Get your Australian culinary arts qualification assessed for U.S. equivalency before applying. A three-year TAFE or university program in hospitality or culinary arts is typically treated as equivalent to a U.S. bachelor's degree for E-3 visa specialty occupation purposes.
Target independent restaurants over chain employers
Independent fine-dining restaurants and hotel groups are more likely to sponsor E-3 visas for skilled line cooks than large chains. Look for kitchens with a head chef who has direct hiring authority and a track record of recruiting internationally trained staff.
Confirm the role is framed as specialty occupation
Your E-3 petition only works if the employer describes the Line Cook position as requiring a specific culinary degree, not just experience. Review the job description before signing an offer to ensure the duties and degree requirement are clearly stated for the DOL's Labor Condition Application.
Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service for your LCA
The Labor Condition Application must be certified by the DOL before you can apply for your visa at the consulate. Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service to handle your LCA and visa paperwork so the employer isn't navigating the process alone, which is a common reason sponsorship falls through.
Ask employers about E-Verify enrollment before accepting
Your employer must be registered with E-Verify to confirm your work authorization after you arrive. Raise this before accepting an offer. Many smaller restaurants aren't yet enrolled, but it's a straightforward process and worth confirming so there are no delays on your start date.
Search for E-3 Line Cook roles through Migrate Mate
Most general job searches won't filter for E-3 visa sponsorship by role. Migrate Mate lets you search specifically for Line Cook positions where employers have indicated willingness to sponsor, saving time you'd otherwise spend cold-contacting kitchens that can't or won't file.
E-3 Visa Line Cook: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find Line Cook jobs with E-3 visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for this search. You can filter for Line Cook roles where employers are open to E-3 sponsorship, rather than sifting through listings that don't address visa status at all. It's designed for Australian professionals looking for U.S. positions, so the results are relevant from the start.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does a Line Cook role qualify as a specialty occupation for the E-3?
It can, but only if the employer requires a bachelor's degree or equivalent in a specific culinary field as a genuine condition of the job. Roles described as needing general experience or any degree won't meet the specialty occupation standard. The position must be framed around a specific theoretical and practical body of culinary knowledge tied to a formal qualification.
How does the E-3 compare to the H-1B for Line Cook positions?
The E-3 is available only to Australian nationals and has a separate annual cap of 10,500 visas that has never been fully used, so there's no lottery. The H-1B visa is subject to an oversubscribed lottery, meaning most applicants aren't selected regardless of qualifications. For an Australian line cook with a qualifying culinary degree, the E-3 is a far more reliable path to U.S. employment.
Can I change kitchens or employers while on an E-3?
Yes, but your new employer must file a fresh Labor Condition Application and you'll need to obtain a new E-3 visa stamp before returning to the U.S. if you travel internationally. If you stay in the country, a change of employer is possible without leaving, but both the LCA and your employer's documentation must be updated before you start the new role.
