Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding E-3 Visa Sponsorship as a Maintenance Technician
Translate your Australian credentials for U.S. employers
A three-year Australian engineering or trades degree is generally accepted as equivalent to a U.S. bachelor's degree for E-3 visa purposes. Document your qualifications in a credential evaluation letter before applying so employers don't stall on unfamiliar formats.
Target employers with facilities or engineering departments
Large manufacturers, hospital networks, university campuses, and commercial property managers regularly hire maintenance technicians and have HR teams familiar with work visa processes. Smaller employers may not have sponsored before, so prioritize organizations with dedicated facilities departments.
Frame your role as a specialty occupation in applications
The E-3 requires the position to qualify as a specialty occupation. When applying, highlight degree-level requirements in the job description and your technical specialization, whether HVAC, electrical systems, or predictive maintenance, rather than general handyman duties.
Ask your employer about LCA timing before accepting an offer
Your employer must file a certified Labor Condition Application with the DOL before you can apply for your E-3 visa at the consulate. DOL typically certifies LCAs within seven business days, but confirm this step is budgeted into your start date timeline.
Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service to handle your LCA and visa paperwork
The LCA, DS-160, and consulate preparation involve parallel steps that are easy to sequence incorrectly. Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service manages the entire process from offer to consulate appointment, so nothing falls through the gaps between employer and applicant responsibilities.
Verify your employer is prepared to pay prevailing wage
The LCA requires your employer to certify they'll pay you at least the DOL prevailing wage for a maintenance technician in your work location. Check the DOL's Foreign Labor Certification Data Center to understand the wage level applicable to your specific role and county.
E-3 Visa Maintenance Technician: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find Maintenance Technician jobs with E-3 visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for Australian professionals searching for U.S. roles with E-3 sponsorship. Standard job boards don't filter by visa type, so you waste time applying to employers who won't sponsor. Migrate Mate surfaces employers and roles where E-3 sponsorship is a realistic outcome for qualified maintenance technicians.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does a Maintenance Technician role qualify as a specialty occupation for the E-3?
It depends on how the role is defined. The E-3 requires the position to normally require a bachelor's degree or equivalent in a specific field. A maintenance technician role focused on building systems engineering, industrial automation, or facilities management with a degree requirement will qualify. A general trades role without a degree requirement typically won't. The job description wording matters significantly at the consulate.
How does the E-3 visa compare to the H-1B for Maintenance Technician roles?
The E-3 is available only to Australian citizens, but it has a major practical advantage: no lottery. The H-1B visa has an annual cap with a random selection process, meaning qualified applicants are frequently not selected. The E-3 has a 10,500 annual allocation that has never been exhausted, so a qualified maintenance technician with a job offer can proceed directly to the consulate without waiting for lottery results.
Can I switch Maintenance Technician employers while on an E-3?
Yes, but you can't simply transfer your existing E-3 to a new employer. Your new employer must file a fresh LCA with the DOL and you'll need a new E-3 visa stamp, which requires a consulate appointment in Australia or a third country. You can work for the new employer once you have the new visa, so plan the timing around your consulate availability.
