ABOUT THE TEAM
OpenAI’s Forward Deployed Engineering (FDE) org sits at the intersection of product, engineering, research, and go-to-market. We take frontier platform capabilities into the real world with design partners, turning raw customer signal into shipped software, repeatable patterns, and durable products.
The FDE Platform team is primarily a leverage function that scales the FDE org’s impact to OpenAI’s platform and products. We provide hands-on leverage by embedding with customer-tagged FDE pods to aid in architecting, product shaping, refactoring, and building. This team is perfect for highly collaborative software engineers who love innovating on cutting-edge products with other builders.
ABOUT THE ROLE
As the Engineering Manager for Platform FDE, you will lead a small team that acts as a multiplier for the broader FDE org. Your mandate is to increase the rate at which customer-grounded ideas become durable, generalizable platform bets, by providing hands-on product and engineering leverage to customer-tagged pods.
You will partner with customer-tagged FDEs who are driving delivery and customer outcomes, and embed Platform FDE capacity where they can provide the highest leverage. In practice that means working in the trenches on architecture, product shaping, refactoring, hardening, and reusable abstractions, while preserving the pod’s ownership of customer understanding and day-to-day execution. You will also collaborate closely with our B2B Platform Team and other long-term owners to align early on what should generalize, what should remain customer-specific, and what “ready for handoff” looks like.
This role requires a combination of engineering leadership and strong product-oriented judgment. You will manage a focused portfolio of platform incubation work with explicit hypotheses, success criteria, and measurable adoption outcomes, and you will be accountable for translating deployment signal into reusable capabilities that can be handed off cleanly to long-term owners. You will be expected to lead through influence across multiple stakeholders, uphold a high technical bar, and establish clear responsibility boundaries between your team, customer pods, and partner organizations.
This role is based in
San Francisco or New York City
and is not a travel role. We use a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office per week. We offer relocation assistance. Travel is optional-by-project and typically < 10%, with occasional spikes for key embeds or launches.
IN THIS ROLE YOU WILL
Guide a focused portfolio of platform bets:
- Steer direction for a small number of high-signal problems, with clear hypotheses, success criteria, sequencing, and measurable adoption outcomes.
Build and validate with customers:
- Ensure the team ships working software with design partners, instruments usage and outcomes, and iterates quickly based on real-world adoption and constraints.
Co-develop with long-term owners:
- Partner early with B2B Platform (and other durable owners) to align on architecture, interfaces, security/governance requirements, and handoff criteria, staying engaged through validation and the path to scale.
Maintain a high engineering bar:
- Set and enforce standards for design, code quality, testing, observability, and operational readiness appropriate for enterprise use.
Grow and develop the team:
- Coach and develop engineers through direct feedback, clear expectations, and durable team mechanisms that reinforce execution and ownership.
Operate with high judgment and influence:
- Make clear tradeoffs under ambiguity, communicate decisions crisply across stakeholders, and drive outcomes through partnership rather than formal authority.
YOU MIGHT THRIVE IN THIS ROLE IF YOU BRING
- 8+ years of engineering experience, including 2+ years managing high-performance engineers
- Are deeply customer-obsessed and can partner credibly with senior stakeholders while keeping a high bar for delivery and technical rigor.
- Naturally act as a shepherd: you elevate and refine others’ ideas, sharpen hypotheses, and make disciplined “scale vs pause” calls with clear reasoning.
- Excel at cross-functional execution, forming tight partnerships with engineering, product, research, and GTM teams to deliver outcomes without needing formal authority.
- Can build inclusive team mechanics – rotations, mentorship, and scoped ownership – that increase collaboration across teams rather than creating a gated platform group.

Frame your Australian credentials for U.S. hiring
A three-year Australian bachelor's degree is generally accepted as equivalent to a U.S. four-year degree for E-3 visa specialty occupation purposes. Get a credential evaluation before your first interview round so you can address it confidently if asked.
Target employers with active LCA filing history
Search the DOL's Foreign Labor Application Gateway for certified LCAs under SOC code 11-9041 to identify companies that have already sponsored Platform Engineering or infrastructure leadership roles, these employers understand the E-3 process and won't need educating.
Position your role as a specialty occupation early
Platform Engineering Manager is a qualifying specialty occupation, but your offer letter needs to reflect it. Push HR to specify that the role requires a degree in computer science or engineering, not just 'a relevant degree,' before the LCA is filed with DOL.
Negotiate LCA filing into your offer timeline
The LCA must be DOL-certified before your consulate appointment can be scheduled. Build at least two weeks of LCA processing time into your start date negotiation so your first day isn't delayed by paperwork your employer controls, not you.
Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service for end-to-end support
Once you have an offer, use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service to handle your LCA and visa paperwork. This is especially useful for Platform Engineering Manager roles where the specialty occupation framing requires precise documentation to satisfy USCIS standards at the consulate.
Clarify E-3 renewal expectations before accepting an offer
E-3 renewals require a new LCA each cycle, meaning your employer re-certifies your prevailing wage every two years. Confirm your employer is prepared to do this before signing, companies new to E-3 sometimes assume the first filing is a one-time effort.
E-3 Visa Platform Engineering Manager: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find Platform Engineering Manager jobs that offer E-3 visa sponsorship?
Use Migrate Mate to search Platform Engineering Manager roles filtered specifically for E-3 sponsorship. Most general job boards don't distinguish between visa types, so you can't easily tell which employers have filed LCAs for this role before. Migrate Mate surfaces employers with verified E-3 sponsorship history, saving you from applying to companies that will decline once they learn you need sponsorship.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does a Platform Engineering Manager role qualify as a specialty occupation for the E-3?
Yes. Platform Engineering Manager roles require theoretical and practical application of highly specialized knowledge, typically a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, software engineering, or a closely related field. The DOL classifies this type of infrastructure and engineering leadership work under management of computer and information systems, which consistently meets the specialty occupation standard used to certify E-3 LCAs.
How does the E-3 visa compare to H-1B for Platform Engineering Manager roles?
The E-3 has no annual lottery and no numerical cap that affects most applicants, so there's no April registration gamble that the H-1B visa requires. You can apply at a U.S. consulate in Australia as soon as your employer's LCA is DOL-certified, often within weeks of an offer. H-1B requires an October 1 start date at the earliest for cap-subject petitions, making E-3 significantly faster for Australians in this role.
Can I transfer my E-3 to a new employer if I change Platform Engineering Manager jobs?
Yes, but there's no formal transfer mechanism, each new employer must file a fresh LCA with the DOL and you'll need a new visa stamp if your current one has expired. You can start working for the new employer once they have a certified LCA and you've obtained updated E-3 status, either through a consulate appointment or, in some cases, a change of status filing with USCIS.
