E-3 Visa Postdoctoral Research Fellow Jobs
Postdoctoral Research Fellow roles at U.S. universities and research institutions qualify as specialty occupations under the E-3 visa, making E-3 sponsorship straightforward for Australian academics. The E-3 has no lottery, no annual cap pressure, and renews in two-year increments, so you can stay as long as your research position continues.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding E-3 Visa Sponsorship as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow
Frame your CV for U.S. academic hiring
U.S. research institutions expect a CV, not a resume, with sections for publications, conference presentations, grants, and supervisor references. Australian 3-year bachelor's degrees are accepted as equivalent to a U.S. 4-year degree for E-3 specialty occupation purposes.
Target institutions with active research funding
R1 doctoral universities and NIH- or NSF-funded labs sponsor postdocs most reliably because grant budgets typically absorb LCA and visa costs. Search DOL's OFLC disclosure data to confirm whether a specific department has filed E-3 LCAs for research roles before.
Confirm your offer letter covers specialty occupation requirements
Your appointment letter must state that a research doctorate is required for the role, not merely preferred. 'PhD preferred' language can cause problems at the consulate, so ask your hiring department to revise it before the LCA is filed with DOL.
Understand the LCA timeline before your start date
DOL certifies the Labor Condition Application within seven business days in most cases. Build this into your onboarding timeline so your employer files early enough that your E-3 stamp is in hand before you need to travel to the United States.
Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service for the paperwork
Postdoc appointments often move fast once a PI decides to hire. Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service to handle your LCA and visa paperwork end-to-end, so you're not scrambling through USCIS instructions while finishing your PhD or current postdoc contract.
Negotiate visa costs into your offer before signing
Most research universities expect to cover LCA and visa filing costs for postdoc hires. Raise this before you accept in writing. Once the offer letter is signed without a cost clause, getting reimbursement later becomes significantly harder.

Find Postdoctoral Research Fellow JobsPostdoctoral Research Fellow E-3 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find Postdoctoral Research Fellow jobs that offer E-3 visa sponsorship?
Search Migrate Mate to filter Postdoctoral Research Fellow roles by employers with confirmed E-3 sponsorship history. Many postdoc positions don't advertise visa support explicitly, but R1 universities and federally funded research labs routinely sponsor E-3 visas because the process is faster and cheaper than H-1B and doesn't require a lottery slot.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does a Postdoctoral Research Fellow role qualify as a specialty occupation for the E-3?
Yes. Postdoctoral positions require a PhD in a specific discipline as a baseline condition of employment, which satisfies the E-3 specialty occupation standard directly. The theoretical and practical application of highly specialized knowledge is built into the role definition, making approval straightforward at most research institutions compared to roles where degree requirements are ambiguous.
How does the E-3 compare to the H-1B for Postdoctoral Research Fellows?
The E-3 is far more practical for postdocs. There's no lottery, no annual cap, and your employer can file any time of year with a seven-business-day DOL certification turnaround. H-1B registration opens once a year in March, and selection is random. For a postdoc hired in October, the E-3 is the only viable work visa that doesn't require waiting up to a year for the next H-1B cycle.
What happens to my E-3 status if my postdoc contract ends early or my lab loses funding?
Your E-3 is tied to the specific employer and position, so if your contract ends, your authorized status ends with it. You have a 60-day grace period to find a new qualifying position, change status, or depart. A new employer would need to file a fresh LCA with DOL and you'd typically need a new consulate appointment in Australia for a new E-3 stamp.
