Translate your Australian QA credentials clearly
A three-year Australian bachelor's degree in computer science or software engineering satisfies the E-3 visa specialty occupation requirement. Get a credential evaluation from a NACES-approved service before your interview so the consular officer can confirm equivalency without delay.
Target employers with active LCA filing history
Search DOL's public LCA disclosure data for companies that have filed for Software Quality Engineer or Software Test Engineer roles. Prior LCA filings signal that HR and legal teams already understand the E-3 process and won't treat your offer as a test case.
Frame your role as a specialty occupation upfront
QA engineering roles can attract scrutiny if the job description sounds generic. Ask the hiring manager to specify degree requirements in the offer letter, and confirm the position requires a technical bachelor's degree, not just general analytical skills.
Clarify E-3 timing differences with your employer
Unlike the H-1B visa, the E-3 requires no lottery wait and can be filed year-round. Your employer files the LCA with DOL before you apply at the consulate, so start the LCA step as soon as you have a signed offer letter to avoid a gap in your start date.
Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service for LCA and paperwork
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service manages your LCA submission, visa paperwork, and consulate preparation end-to-end. This removes the risk of an employer's internal HR team misfiling the LCA or submitting an incorrect prevailing wage determination.
Prepare for specialty occupation questions at the consulate
Consular officers sometimes probe whether QA roles truly require a degree. Bring documentation linking your specific responsibilities, such as test architecture or SDLC oversight, to your degree field. A letter from your employer detailing the technical scope of the role strengthens your case.
E-3 Visa Software Quality Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find Software Quality Engineer jobs with E-3 visa sponsorship?
Search Migrate Mate to find Software Quality Engineer roles at employers with E-3 sponsorship history. Many QA engineering positions qualify as specialty occupations under the E-3 because they require a technical degree, but not every employer advertises sponsorship willingness upfront, so filtering by sponsorship status saves significant time in your search.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does a Software Quality Engineer role qualify as a specialty occupation for the E-3 visa?
Yes, provided the position requires at least a bachelor's degree in a directly related field such as computer science, software engineering, or information systems. Roles focused on manual testing with no degree requirement can fall short of the specialty occupation standard, so the job description and offer letter wording both matter when USCIS or a consular officer reviews the application.
How does the E-3 compare to the H-1B for Software Quality Engineers?
The E-3 is available only to Australian citizens, but it has no lottery and no annual cap, so you can apply as soon as you have a job offer. The H-1B selection rate has been well below 50% in recent years, meaning most applicants wait a year or more before starting. For Australians, the E-3 is the faster and more predictable path to working in the U.S. as a Software Quality Engineer.
Can I switch Software Quality Engineer employers while on an E-3 visa?
Yes. The E-3 is employer-specific, so changing jobs requires your new employer to file a fresh LCA and for you to obtain a new E-3 visa stamp, typically at an Australian consulate. There is no USCIS petition required for a new employer, which makes the process faster than an H-1B transfer. You can start the new role once the LCA is certified and your new visa is issued.
