Verify your degree matches the role
Consular officers assess whether your qualification directly relates to the Technology Director position. An IT management degree supports this cleanly; a general business degree may require a credential evaluation letter confirming equivalency to a U.S. bachelor's in a relevant technical field.
Target employers with prior LCA history
Search the DOL's Office of Foreign Labor Certification disclosure data to identify companies that have filed LCAs for technology leadership roles. Employers already familiar with E-3 visa requirements move faster and rarely need internal legal approvals from scratch.
Clarify the specialty occupation requirement early
Technology Director titles can span purely managerial to deeply technical roles. Frame your position around the technical knowledge it requires, not just team oversight. A consular officer will want to see that a specific bachelor's-level field is an actual prerequisite for the job.
Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service for the LCA step
The LCA must be certified by DOL before your consulate appointment. Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service to handle your LCA and visa paperwork so the offer-to-appointment timeline doesn't stall while your employer figures out the process.
Negotiate who covers the government filing fees
E-3 regulations do not prohibit employees from paying their own filing fees, but many Australian candidates successfully ask employers to cover the DS-160 fee and any third-party preparation costs. Raise this during the offer stage, not after paperwork has started.
Prepare for nonimmigrant intent questions at the consulate
Technology Director candidates married to U.S. citizens or with U.S. property face closer scrutiny on nonimmigrant intent. Have a clear account of your ties to Australia and your plans after any given employment term before your consulate interview.
E-3 Visa Technology Director: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find Technology Director jobs with E-3 visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate lets you search specifically for Technology Director roles where employers have E-3 sponsorship history, so you're not cold-applying to companies that have never navigated the process. Filtering by employers with prior LCA filings for technology leadership positions saves significant time and avoids offers that fall through at the paperwork stage.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does a Technology Director role qualify as a specialty occupation for the E-3?
Yes, provided the position genuinely requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific technical or management field, such as computer science, information systems, or engineering. Roles where the degree requirement is listed as preferred rather than required, or where any bachelor's degree suffices, can face scrutiny. The job duties and the employer's own internal requirements both factor into the consular officer's assessment.
How does the E-3 compare to the H-1B for Technology Director candidates?
The E-3 has no lottery and no annual cap, so you can apply at any point during the year and expect a decision at your consulate interview rather than waiting on a random selection. H-1B registration closes in March with results in April, meaning a rejected registration delays your start date by a full year. For Technology Director roles, the E-3 is a direct path where qualification, not luck, determines the outcome.
Can I change employers while on an E-3 as a Technology Director?
Yes, but the E-3 is employer-specific, so your current visa does not transfer to a new company. Your new employer must file a fresh LCA with DOL and you'll need either a new visa stamp from an Australian consulate or, if you're already in the U.S., you can begin work once the new LCA is certified and the employer has documented the sponsorship, without requiring a new stamp in certain circumstances. Confirm the specific pathway with your new employer's process before resigning.
