Editor Jobs in Illinois: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a editor in Illinois?
Becoming an editor in Illinois typically starts with a bachelor's degree in English, journalism, or communications from a university such as Northwestern, the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, or DePaul. Illinois does not require a state-issued license to work as an editor. Most employers expect a portfolio of published or professionally edited work, and many entry-level editors build experience through campus publications, literary journals, or internships at Chicago-area media outlets before advancing to staff roles.
Which companies hire editors in Illinois?
Employers hiring editors in Illinois right now include Village Media, Tyndale House Publishers, and Sourcebooks, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Chicago's dense concentration of publishing, advertising, and higher education institutions makes it one of the most consistently active editorial hiring markets in the Midwest.
Which Illinois cities have the most editor jobs?
Chicago, Carol Stream, and Champaign account for the most editor openings in Illinois. Chicago drives the large majority of demand due to its publishing houses, marketing agencies, and major university presses, while Evanston and Champaign generate steady openings anchored by Northwestern University and the University of Illinois campus communities respectively.
Are there remote editor jobs in Illinois?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 86% of editor openings tied to Illinois are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting the desk-based and document-driven nature of editorial work. Copy editing, content strategy, and digital editorial roles are the most likely to be fully remote, while on-site presence is more common for managing editors coordinating print production or in-person newsroom teams.
How can I get hired as a editor in Illinois with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is building a portfolio through unpaid or low-paid editorial work and then targeting entry-level roles with titles like editorial assistant or content coordinator. Large Illinois employers such as Tribune Publishing and university presses at the University of Chicago and Northwestern regularly hire entry-level staff. Contributing to campus or community literary journals, completing an editorial internship at a Chicago-area agency, and earning a certificate in copyediting through a continuing education program can all give an inexperienced candidate a competitive edge.
Where can I find and apply to editor jobs in Illinois?
