Creative Jobs in Illinois: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a creative in Illinois?
Most creative roles in Illinois do not require a state-issued license, but a strong portfolio is the primary hiring credential. Employers typically expect a bachelor's degree in graphic design, advertising, communications, or a related field from an Illinois institution such as the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, DePaul University, or Columbia College Chicago. Building a focused body of work through internships, freelance projects, or student campaigns is the most direct path to landing your first role.
Which companies hire creatives in Illinois?
Employers hiring creatives in Illinois right now include Salesforce, VML, and EVERSANA, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Illinois's deep base of global advertising agencies, corporate headquarters, and media companies means consistent demand for creative talent across agency and in-house environments.
Which Illinois cities have the most creative jobs?
Chicago, Peoria, and Geneva account for the most creative openings in Illinois. Chicago dominates because it is home to major agency networks, Fortune 500 headquarters, and a dense media and tech sector, while suburban markets like Naperville and Evanston see demand from regional offices and mid-size companies based outside the city core.
Are there remote creative jobs in Illinois?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 62% of creative openings tied to Illinois are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting how much of the work centers on digital deliverables rather than physical presence. Roles in copywriting, content strategy, and UX writing are the most likely to be fully remote, while art direction and production design often require at least some on-site collaboration.
How can I get hired as a creative in Illinois with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is an internship or junior associate role at a Chicago-area agency, where studios like Leo Burnett and DDB run structured intern programs that regularly convert to full-time positions. Entry-level titles such as junior copywriter, design associate, or content coordinator are the common first steps, and candidates from adjacent roles like marketing coordinator or social media assistant transition in regularly. A polished portfolio, even built from student or self-initiated work, carries more weight than years of experience at this level.
Where can I find and apply to creative jobs in Illinois?
You can find and apply to creative jobs in Illinois on Migrate Mate, which lists current Illinois openings across agencies, in-house teams, and studios. Search the roles that fit your specialty and experience level and apply directly to the ones that match.
