Media Director Jobs in Illinois: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a media director in Illinois?
Media director is not a state-licensed role in Illinois, so there is no Illinois-specific exam or registration required to hold the title. Most employers expect a bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, or a related field, combined with several years of hands-on media planning or buying experience. Building a portfolio of campaign results and advancing through roles like media planner or media manager is the most direct path in the Illinois market.
How much do media directors make in Illinois?
Media directors in Illinois earn a median of about $81,080 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $41,250 for the lowest 10% to over $169,040 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire media directors in Illinois?
Employers hiring media directors in Illinois right now include Epsilon, Fusion92, and Mastercard, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Illinois's deep concentration of advertising agencies, Fortune 500 headquarters, and broadcast media groups in the Chicago metro makes it one of the more consistent states for senior media leadership openings.
Which Illinois cities have the most media director jobs?
Chicago, Illinois, and Pekin have the most media director openings in Illinois. Chicago dominates due to its dense cluster of major advertising agencies, corporate headquarters, and media companies, while suburban markets like Naperville benefit from the regional offices of large national brands that concentrate their marketing operations in the greater Chicagoland area.
Are there remote media director jobs in Illinois?
Yes, and more than many comparable senior roles. About 84% of media director openings tied to Illinois are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting the strategic and desk-based nature of the work. Campaign planning, vendor negotiations, and performance reporting translate well to remote settings, though roles requiring hands-on broadcast production or on-site agency collaboration tend to require at least a hybrid arrangement.
How can I get hired as a media director in Illinois with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through a media coordinator or media planner role at one of Chicago's many mid-size advertising agencies or in-house marketing teams, where direct exposure to planning cycles and buying platforms builds the foundation quickly. Large Illinois employers like Publicis Groupe run structured rotational or associate programs suited to candidates without extensive experience. A demonstrated portfolio, even from internships or freelance campaigns, carries significant weight, and certifications in Google Ads or Meta advertising strengthen a candidate's standing in a competitive applicant pool.
