There is no state-issued license or registration required to work as a media director in New York. A bachelor's degree in advertising, communications, or marketing is the standard entry point, and many senior roles at New York agencies favor candidates with a portfolio of integrated campaigns and demonstrated team leadership experience.
How much do media directors make in New York?
Media directors in New York earn a median of about $107,550 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $61,960 for the lowest 10% to over $222,580 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire media directors in New York?
Employers hiring media directors in New York right now include Horizon Media, Fitch Ratings, and Nexstar Media Group, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Which New York cities have the most media director jobs?
New York, Brooklyn, and Harrison have the most media director openings in New York. New York City drives the overwhelming share of demand given its density of advertising agencies, media conglomerates, and in-house brand teams, while White Plains and other Westchester locations reflect corporate headquarters and regional offices that manage their own media functions independently.
Are there remote media director jobs in New York?
Yes, and more than many senior creative roles. About 36% of media director openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the strategic and analytical nature of much of the work. Campaign strategy, media planning, vendor negotiations, and performance reporting can all be done off-site, though client-facing agencies tend to require in-office presence for pitches and key account meetings.
How can I get hired as a media director in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is starting as a media coordinator or media planner at one of New York's advertising agencies or in-house brand teams, where you build campaign experience before moving into management.
