Editor Jobs in Virginia: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a editor in Virginia?
Editors in Virginia typically need a bachelor's degree in English, journalism, or communications, and there is no state-issued license required for the role. Most employers in the Northern Virginia and Richmond markets expect a portfolio demonstrating editing across relevant formats, whether that is federal technical documents, digital content, or news copy. Building experience through campus publications, internships at Virginia media outlets or government contractors, and earning certifications in plain-language writing strengthens a candidate's profile considerably.
Which companies hire editors in Virginia?
Employers hiring editors in Virginia right now include Summit Technologies, HII, and ICF, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Virginia's dense concentration of federal agencies and defense contractors means many of these openings are for technical editors with security-clearance eligibility or experience with government documentation standards.
Which Virginia cities have the most editor jobs?
McLean, Arlington, and Reston have the most editor openings in Virginia. Northern Virginia's proximity to federal agencies, defense primes, and media organizations headquartered near D.C. drives the bulk of demand, while Richmond's government offices, university presses, and growing digital media sector account for a meaningful share of the state's remaining openings.
Are there remote editor jobs in Virginia?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 69% of editor openings tied to Virginia are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting that editing is fundamentally a desk-based, document-driven role that translates well to distributed work. Technical editing for government contractors and digital content editing tend to have the highest share of fully remote positions among Virginia listings.
How can I get hired as a editor in Virginia with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for editorial assistant or junior copy editor roles at Virginia-based government contractors, university presses such as those affiliated with the University of Virginia or Virginia Commonwealth University, or regional news outlets in the Richmond and Northern Virginia markets. Building a portfolio through volunteer editing, campus publications, or open-source documentation projects matters more than years of experience for most entry-level postings. A strong writing sample set and familiarity with AP or federal plain-language style give candidates a clear edge.
Where can I find and apply to editor jobs in Virginia?
You can find and apply to editor jobs in Virginia on Migrate Mate, which lists current Virginia openings updated regularly. Search the listings to find roles that match your experience, specialty, and preferred location, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
