Consultant Jobs in Virginia: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a consultant in Virginia?
Most consultant roles in Virginia require at minimum a bachelor's degree in business, public policy, information technology, or a closely related field. Virginia does not issue a state license for general business consultants, but many employers require or prefer a recognized credential such as the Certified Management Consultant designation or a Project Management Professional certification. For government-facing roles, which make up a large share of Virginia's consulting market, obtaining or maintaining a security clearance is often a practical prerequisite early in your career.
Which companies hire consultants in Virginia?
Employers hiring consultants in Virginia right now include CarMax, The Good Feet Store, and Deloitte, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Virginia's concentration of federal agencies and defense programs means consulting firms with government contracts are among the most consistent sources of openings across the state.
Which Virginia cities have the most consultant jobs?
The cities with the most consultant openings in Virginia are Arlington, Richmond, and McLean. Northern Virginia dominates the distribution because of its density of federal agencies, defense contractors, and large consulting firm offices, while Richmond draws openings through state government advisory work and commercial clients, and Hampton Roads generates demand through military and defense consulting programs.
Are there remote consultant jobs in Virginia?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 42% of consultant openings tied to Virginia are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting how much of the work involves analysis, reporting, and client communication rather than on-site presence. Strategy, technology, and management consulting roles tend to offer the most remote flexibility, while implementation and on-site advisory roles typically require regular in-person availability.
How can I get hired as a consultant in Virginia with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to analyst or associate consultant roles at large Virginia-based firms like Booz Allen Hamilton, Leidos, or SAIC, all of which run structured new-graduate and early-career programs that develop candidates without prior consulting experience. Lateral moves from adjacent roles in project coordination, business analysis, or program support at Virginia government contractors are a common way in. Completing a relevant certification such as the PMP or earning an active or interim security clearance gives entry-level candidates a concrete edge in Virginia's government-focused consulting market.
Where can I find and apply to consultant jobs in Virginia?
You can find and apply to consultant jobs in Virginia on Migrate Mate, which lists current Virginia openings across consulting specialties and experience levels. Find a role that fits and apply directly.
