Education Counselor Jobs in Maine: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a education counselor in Maine?
Becoming an education counselor in Maine depends on the setting. For K-12 public schools, you must hold a valid Maine Department of Education certification as a school counselor, which requires a master's degree in school counseling and a supervised practicum. For higher education or nonprofit roles, a master's in counseling or a related field is typically required, though no separate state license applies. The Maine certification application is processed through the Maine DOE's educator certification office.
Which companies hire education counselors in Maine?
Employers hiring education counselors in Maine right now include Clarvida, Sweetser, and LifeStance Health, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Maine's public school systems and the University of Maine System campuses across the state tend to be the most consistent sources of open positions.
Which Maine cities have the most education counselor jobs?
The cities with the most education counselor openings in Maine are Bangor, Portland, and Rockport. Portland drives the largest share of listings because it anchors Maine's most populous school district and hosts several colleges and nonprofits, while Bangor and Augusta reflect the concentration of state government offices, regional school administrative units, and University of Maine System campuses in those areas.
Are there remote education counselor jobs in Maine?
Yes, but they're rare. About 50% of education counselor openings tied to Maine are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting that most of the work involves in-person meetings with students, families, and school staff. The roles most likely to offer remote or hybrid arrangements are those focused on college access advising, virtual academic coaching, or statewide program coordination for nonprofit and government employers.
How can I get hired as a education counselor in Maine with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for paraprofessional or educational technician roles within Maine's public school districts, which regularly hire people without a full counseling credential to support counselors and case managers. Portland Public Schools and the Maine Department of Education-funded AmeriCorps positions in college access programs are concrete starting points. Completing a supervised counseling practicum at a Maine university and obtaining your Maine DOE certification while in a support role is the most direct route to a full counselor position.
