Adjunct Professor Jobs in Maine: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a adjunct professor in Maine?
To become an adjunct professor in Maine, you typically need at least a master's degree in your teaching discipline, though terminal degrees are expected at four-year institutions. Maine does not require a state teaching license for college-level instructors, but professional licensure in fields like nursing, social work, or education strengthens your application considerably. Most hiring happens directly through department chairs at institutions such as community colleges in the Maine Community College System or University of Maine campuses.
Which companies hire adjunct professors in Maine?

Maine's higher education sector is anchored by public institutions and regional colleges that rely heavily on adjunct faculty to fill specialized and general education course needs each semester.
Which Maine cities have the most adjunct professor jobs?
Orono, Bangor, and Lewiston have the most adjunct professor openings in Maine. Portland leads because of its concentration of community colleges, health sciences programs, and professional schools, while Bangor and Augusta are driven by University of Maine campuses and the Maine Community College System institutions that serve those regions.

About 25% of adjunct professor openings tied to Maine are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting growth in fully online programs. General education courses in writing, math, and business administration are the most commonly offered in remote formats.
How can I get hired as a adjunct professor in Maine with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying as a lab instructor, teaching assistant, or course facilitator at a Maine Community College System school, where departments regularly hire candidates who have strong subject expertise even without prior classroom experience.
