Research Assistant Professor Jobs in Maine: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a research assistant professor in Maine?
Becoming a research assistant professor in Maine requires earning a doctoral degree in your research discipline, typically followed by postdoctoral training. Maine does not issue a state license specifically for this faculty role, so hiring is governed by institutional standards rather than a licensing board. Candidates build their case through peer-reviewed publications, grant experience, and letters of recommendation, then apply directly to research universities, medical schools, or independent research institutes operating in Maine.
Which companies hire research assistant professors in Maine?
Companies currently hiring research assistant professors in Maine include University of Maine, MaineHealth, and Central Maine Healthcare, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Maine's hiring is shaped heavily by its academic medical centers, research universities, and specialized institutes such as Jackson Laboratory, which focuses on genomics and precision medicine research.
Which Maine cities have the most research assistant professor jobs?
Orono, Portland, and Lewiston have the most research assistant professor openings in Maine. Orono anchors the market through the University of Maine's research enterprise, Portland draws demand from MaineHealth's academic affiliates and the University of New England, and Bar Harbor generates specialized openings through Jackson Laboratory's genetics and biomedical research programs.
Are there remote research assistant professor jobs in Maine?
Yes, but they're rare. About 7% of research assistant professor openings tied to Maine are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting that most positions require on-site laboratory work, access to research equipment, or in-person collaboration with graduate students. The parts of the role most amenable to remote work are data analysis, manuscript preparation, and grant writing rather than wet-lab or fieldwork components.

Candidates coming from adjacent roles such as research scientist, laboratory manager, or visiting instructor positions build competitive profiles. A strong publication record and even one successfully managed grant application, whether as principal investigator or co-investigator, significantly improves your standing with Maine hiring committees.
